India

Christmas is upon us and what better way to celebrate the festivities than to book a magical winter getaway to an exhilarating European City such as Paris or Krakow?

PARIS

Paris, the City of Love! With its gorgeous architecture, stunning skyline and amazing food, you will be spoilt for choice for things to do in this vibrant city. There is something for everything with the city’s wide array of restaurants, exciting tourist attractions, stunning architecture and local French cuisine – there’s plenty to do!

Our top things to do in Paris this winter:

It wouldn’t be a trip to Paris with seeing one of its most famous attractions – The Eiffel Tower. Constructed in 1889 – it took two years, two months and five days to build, with 7,3000 tonnes of iron used and 60 tonnes of paint – phew! Today it stands at 1063 feet, 31 feet higher than when originally built. The Eiffel Tower boasts breath-taking views of Paris from three different floors, including a variety of restaurants, gift-shops and a champagne and Macaroon bar. Definitely a must-see!

If you’re after some local cuisine in a cosy family environment to warm up from the cold, then Chez Trassoudaine is just the place for you. Situated just west of Notre Dame, this family-run restaurant was established in 1970 and has a gorgeous aesthetic. The space is designed around the bar, with a large dining room on one side and a glass-roofed winter garden on the other. You can sample their famous potatoes sautéed in goose fat or maybe chow down on some fresh fish delivered daily from the fish market. Yum!

If the Eiffel Tower isn’t your thing, then why not experience the gorgeous Parisian views from a hot air balloon ride situated in Parc André-Citroën. The park is in the 15e district of Paris and was founded in 1992. It is located on the site of a former Citroën factory and is named after André Citroën, founder of Citroën Cars (fun fact)!

The 10-minute hot air balloon ride rises up to 300m high and fits up to 30 passengers. An adult ticket costs from €12 which can be added onto your break!

The Louvre is the world’s largest art museum and is home to Davinci’s famous Mona Lisa painting, as well as a whole collection of western art from the Middle Ages – 19 ^th century.

Amble around the aisles soaking up the history and culture that it has to offer or have some lunch in the grounds while taking in the stunning glass architecture of the Louvre Palace. Tickets are from €17 and the Louvre is open every day except Tuesdays

KRAKOW

Krakow is in southern Poland and is known for its rich history. There’s plenty to do to in this diverse city, if you’re a keen history buff and delight at the thought of delving into Poland’s rich medieval past or you’re someone who fancies a stroll along the Old Town – Krakow has something for you!

While in Krakow you can:

Krakow’s Old Town used to be the heart of Poland’s Political life and is one of the most famous old districts in Poland today. It stays lively all throughout the year, especially in the main Market Square, which boasts the title of being one of the biggest market squares in Europe! There’s plenty to do – enjoy a hot or cold drink in one of the many cafes or bars, enjoy panoramic views of Krakow from the Gothic Town Hall Tower or if you prefer sight-seeing from the ground, you can take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage.

Located in Wieliczka – the mine is now an official Polish Historic Monument. It is one of Poland’s largest tourist attractions and is one of the World’s oldest operating salt mines. The mine was used to produce table salt, from the Neolithic age all the way to 2007!

The mine’s attractions include an underground lake, four chapels, rock salt statues, sculptures and much more.

The Chimera restaurant is one not to be missed. Situated close to the Market Square, this three dining-roomed traditional restaurant is located in a fourteenth-century cellar, historically used to store beer and wine. A gorgeous feature of this ‘Gothic’ restaurant is the unique fireplace which is still used to roast meat in a special roasting dish made of glass.

Chimera specialises in Polish Cuisine and has an extensive menu from which you can choose a variety of delicious options. Plus, you can visit Chimera’s own salad bar – the first and biggest of its kind in Krakow. You’ll be spoilt for choice!

Many lives were claimed at Auschwitz and the Holocaust remains one of the greatest tragedies of the 20 ^th Century. Admission to the grounds of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial is free but there is a charge for booking a Memorial guide, renting headphones and documentary watching. There are a few rules when visiting so be sure to check them out before heading there.

WE LOVE THE CARIBBEAN!
We love the Caribbean! Best known for white sandy beaches, turquoise blue seas and some of the best holiday resorts out there, what’s not to like? Combine that with a welcoming culture, mouth-watering cuisine and excursions galore, and you’ve got a holiday that has all of the right ingredients. Whilst each and every Caribbean island has something special to offer, there are two that deserve some limelight, and first up is Jamaica.
JAMAICA
Sat right in the heart of the Caribbean, Jamaica offers a warming feeling of escape, with a vibrant colour and culture to go with it. You’d be absolutely right to think of beaches, sunshine and sand for a holiday here – they’re simply to die for! Wherever you choose to stay, you’ll never be far away from the relaxing sound of the shore and a rum punch. But explore beyond and there’s a whole lot more, making it a destination for all travellers.
From a famed history to lush landscapes and amazing accommodation options to its rich culture, even a two-week holiday would offer something different from each day to the next. For the adrenaline junkies amongst us, there’s plenty of choice! We’re talking zip-lining through the rainforest, zooming down the mountains on a Jamaican bob-sled or jumping into cascading waterfalls. Or slow down the pace with a leisurely horse-ride along the beach – perfect for all ages.

ANTIGUA
Another island paradise, Antigua is home to gorgeous beaches and an array of beautiful resorts for couples, honeymooners and families. But delve a bit deeper and you’ve got an intense, musical culture on your doorstep that’s ready and waiting.
From the busy market stalls in St John’s to the famous Shirley Heights Sunset Party held every Sunday, the steel drums and reggae will have their presence all day – so we say, get stuck in as the rum flows, the BBQ sizzles and the sun sets! Many resorts have live bands playing too, so wherever you go you’ll get a flavour for the upbeat local sounds.
The hiking in Antigua is also a real treat. A small island, you’re never far from a nearby town or village, but you’ll also soon feel like you are miles away from it all. A hike up to the island’s highest point, Mount Obama at 402m takes from 1-3 hours, giving you some epic views from the top. There are two routes available up to the top – but we recommend the North Side – it’s a whole lot more interesting! On route, walk through pineapple plantations, lemon grass fields and dense rainforest filled with bamboo clusters, creeks and ridges, which will give you a real appreciation for the nature here. Oh, and if you’re wondering, it was renamed Mount Obama in 2009 in the hope that the former president would visit the island, but he hasn’t done so yet!
Whilst all Caribbean islands are famed for their beaches, Antigua has a beach for every day of the year. That’s right, there’s 365 of them. So, whether you want to soak up the holiday atmosphere with your fellow holiday-makers or seek a bit of calm – it’s all possible.

CLUB MED – CEFALU, SICILY

We were invited to enjoy the new Club Med resort recently and here is our analysis of their newest acquisition.

Further along there is the Zen area with a quiet freshwater swimming pool, bar, archery & tennis courts. As a bit of fun they offer as an excursion to drive a Fiat car around the Italian countryside, which was very popular.

As with every Club Med they have themed nights for dinner, drinks & evening entertainment so you are never bored. If you don’t mind the lack of a beach, but would like to explore the area of norther Sicily & enjoy the famous hospitality and sense of belonging to the Club Med family then this is the place for you.

Before they disappear. The Omo Vallley, Ethiopia

With faster and more affordable transport the world has become a smaller place. Trips to the Great Wall of China, the ancient Inca ruins of Machu Picchu and temples of Angkor Watt in Cambodia are no longer exclusive vacations for the rich and famous. But this ease of travel comes at a cost, many of the world’s cities have the same shops and restaurants as one another. A global culture is spreading across the planet.

Yet there are still places that are largely undiscovered by tourists, far removed from the glitzy boom cities of Asia, pleasant order of Europe and high-speed Wi-Fi. The Omo Valley, tucked away in southwestern Ethiopia, is one such place. Ethiopia’s resistance to colonialism and political instability in recent decades has allowed this place to be largely forgotten by the industrialization that has marked modern Africa.

Locals get around the dust laden roads by donkey and cart, farmers hack the soil with sickles, and the airport is a portacabin that has seen better days. This isolation has allowed numerous tribes, all distinct from one another, to retain their primeval way of life and even thrive. And as Ethiopian Airlines has started operating a daily flight to the small town of Jinka from Addis Ababa it is now possible to visit these fascinating peoples without taking the arduous dirt road journey across Ethiopia.

Once the people hunted antelope and small pigs but after they disappeared they became cattle herders and farmers as the land is free for cultivating and grazing. In dry season the Hamar live in camps with their herds, surviving off the milk and blood from the cattle.

My sleep was interrupted by the bleat of the goats and moo of the cows but it wasn’t experience I would change. The family I camped close to invited me into their hut for a morning coffee, drank out of a pot made of wood and cow’s skin, and they happily posed for a number of photographs taken with an off camera flash.

The following day I went to the weekly Hamar market in Turmi where locals gather around the dusty town square to swap wares, gossip and drink copious amount of alcohol. Unfortunately, my trip didn’t coincide with the famous cattle-leaping ceremony that men go through in order to reach adulthood, whereupon young Hamar women get whipped, leaving lifelong scars, to prove their love for their kinsmen.

The Karo are more reliant on tourism for survival. Although the beautifying of their bodies with paint is a long practiced tradition their appearance came across as exaggerated for visitors. Women and children wait in their villages during the day for tourists to arrive, charging a small fee for their photo to be taken. This can be paid directly to the person photographed or as a lump sum to the village chief if you are photographing a number of subjects. Unlike the Hamar, the Karo clambered for their picture to be taken and I was made to crudely choose who I wanted to pose for me and my flash. After some deliberation I selected a two very keen boys and some mothers with their new born babies that hung out of their leather front garments oblivious to the click of the camera.

The Karo along with the Mursi tribe are the most visited in the region. The Mursi live in villages two hours from
Jinka so it is recommended that you spend the evening there before leaving for the wilderness in the morning.

Mursi women are famed for having their lower lips pierced and a clay plate inserted when they are 15 or 16. There are a number of theories behind this practice. Some say it was started to warn off slave traders, others remark that it is a sign of beautification and the larger the plate she can fit in her lip the more cattle her father can expect to receive from a prospective husband. The men practice light scarification on their shoulders after killing an enemy, and shave geometric patterns on their head. Both sexes use decorative headpieces such as cow horns and plants which make for fantastic photo opportunities.

The Mursi, like the Hamar, are pastoralists. During the dry season they live mainly along the banks of the Omo. When the rains come they return to the grasslands, east of the river, to live close to their cattle and enjoy fresh
milk.

The Omo Valley has been a popular haunt with photography enthusiasts and the more intrepid among us for a number of years. However, with improving transport links such as the new daily flight from Addis Ababa and the resurfacing of some roads it is now an opportune time to visit these remarkable tribesman. The growing nearby towns of Jinka and Arba Minch have also presented the Hamar, Mursi, Karo and the other tribes in the region the chance of a formal education, a pathway into conventional jobs and modern society. Indeed, younger Hamar and Mursi can be found in these towns in search of a different lifestyle having left their families behind. The changes are gradual but it is unlikely that the fascinating traditions of the tribes will last for many generations more. It is recommended you visit the region sooner rather than later, before they disappear forever.

A trip to the Omo Valley is not for the faint hearted. The lip plates of the Mursi women are as shocking as they are cruel, tribesmen and scouts armed with machine guns can create a tense atmosphere, especially when the flash on your camera fails and they loom over you impatiently as you are trying to fix it. The ill equipped hotels means your internet access in the valley will be very limited and poor in Jinka. However, Ethiopia remains one of Africa’s top destinations. In a two week holiday, you can sip on excellent coffee and explore the some of the best museums on the continent in the safe and sprawling Addis Ababa, travel to the inspirational churches of Lalibela, hike the Simien Mountains and of course spend a few days with the tribesmen of the Omo Valley.

The wellness director of Rocco Forte Hotels reveals her passion for all things Italian.

Irene Forte knows the family business inside out. She joined Rocco Forte Hotels, which was founded by her father, six years ago after reading French and Italian at the University of Oxford, and works alongside her older sister Lydia, who oversees food and drink.

A trilingual, marathon-running charity ambassador, Forte is in charge of elements of learning and development, as well as spas and fitness. She also found time to launch her own Sicilian-inspired skincare line in 2018 after falling in love with the Mediterranean island and its rich ingredients. With recyclable packaging, vegetable- and soya-based inks, and fresh, organic ingredients, Irene Forte Skincare’s entire lifecycle is commendably sustainable, as is her lifestyle.

“I think that a good skincare regime can boost your physical and mental wellbeing. Generally, if you have a good skincare regime, you tend to be conscious about other things, too. The reality is that it needs to be combined with lots of sleep and finding tools to help you relax and not over-stress. As well as this, you need to try and drink lots of water and implement a healthy diet rich in omegas and low in refined sugars and alcohol. Plus, having good facials regularly can do a world of good for your skin.

I strongly believe in using natural products, which is why I created Irene Forte Skincare; it uses the freshest and simplest ingredients from Sicily. It contains a matrix of different Mediterranean ingredients that we actually eat, and that we know are rich in vitamins and minerals that positively impact the body. We also use ingredients that are naturally occurring in our body and that boost skin quality, such as ceramides, sodium PCA and hyaluronic acid.

Lots of chemicals can have a detrimental effect on your skin and on your health more generally. The skin is the largest organ of the body and up to 2kg of chemicals can be absorbed through it each year just from toiletries and skincare products.

After introducing my products to Rocco Forte Hotels and conducting extensive training, it is now the lead brand offered at all its spas with a curated menu of treatments and rituals. In fact, the first two Irene Forte Skincare spas are opening this May. I’m extremely excited about it!

The beauty products I use depend on where I am going and the season. Either way, my staples are a lip balm to keep my lips nourished and a night cream when I travel, given that planes dry out my skin.

As for fashion, I love colour and fun shirts; Borgo de Nor for its dreamy floral dresses and Dolce & Gabbana for its bright prints and the fact that it’s inspired by Sicily. But Aquazzura is my ultimate shoe brand – the shoes are fun, super-high and comfortable. I never go anywhere without heels, given that I’m a little short.

My role as wellness director is to address complete enrichment and unity of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health, fusing proven, pioneering science and technology with inherited wisdom and an affinity with nature. In short, we focus on five areas in life: nourishment, fitness, the mind, community and sustainability. We provide guests with running maps and offer sightseeing running and cycling tours, combining the culture of the city with improving fitness. We strive to bring the best possible local experiences to our guests in each hotel.

How do I relax? I love facials, a good massage and doing lots of sport. I’m also crazy about travel (which correlates to my work) and try and do one adventurous trip per year. Three years ago I went to Burma; I loved the hot air balloons at sunrise in Bagan and the peacefulness of Inle Lake. Two years ago I went trekking in the Himalayas in search of snow leopards.

But given that Rocco Forte Hotels is a family business and that I have my own skincare brand, it’s difficult to separate work from my personal life. But I love what I do, so at times it doesn’t feel like work. I can’t complain!”

Montreux Christmas Market & Beyond

This month I had a flying visit to Montreux.

Set on the shore of Lake Geneva the town is famous for its Jazz Festival.
The journey form Geneva Airport is easy by train as the station is in the
airport.

At Christmas there is a Christmas market along the lake front and you can
even see Santa fly over on his sleigh.As you pass by the numerous stalls you
are met by the smells of mulled wine, roasted chestnuts and crepes.

There are plenty of things to see and do in Montreux and nearby. Visit
Chillon Castle, see the studio where Queen recorded their songs, take the
chocolate train and do some wine tasting.

At Christmas you can also take the cog railway up to Rochers-de Naye and
visit Santa. From there you have views of the Jungfrau, Eiger and Mont Blanc
Mountain ranges During the summer you can also visit an alpine garden.

If you can stay longer the Grand Hotel Suisse-Majestic and the Fairmont
Montreux Palace overlook the lake. Both have spas and the Fairmont also has
indoor and outdoor pools.

ROME – The Eternal City

We travelled to Rome courtesy of Azure Collection, who have a portfolio of only the very best of what Italy can offer.

We stayed at probably the best hotel in Rome – The Eden . Situated high above the Spanish Steps it’s only a short walk down hill to the very centre of Rome and the Via del Condotti for all the ultimate designer stores, plus walking distance to the famous sights of ancient Rome.

The Hotel Eden, now owned by The Dorchester group has had a transformation recently. The whole hotel is beautiful with a stunning design which definitely has the WOW factor. There is a selection of room categories, but even the lead in room is a good size with sumptuous beds and bathrooms. On the roof top there is a restaurant that serves breakfast & all day light dining, I can recommend the breakfasts & the lunches – Il Giardino. Dinner is served in the intimate fine dining roof top restaurant La Terrazza, with an open kitchen so you can see the chefs hard at work. Every member of staff were engaging and informative; they enjoyed looking after us & it showed.

On our 2 day trip we visited the fabulous De Russie Hotel where we had a tour of the hotel than dinner in their Michelin Star restaurant. This is a beautiful hotel, owned by the Forte Group with flowers and candles everywhere. They have a very popular garden – most unusual for a city & especially Rome, where you could relax after a busy day sightseeing or shopping right in the centre.

We also visited the Baglioni Regina , a popular 4* hotel with plenty of amenities and a good restaurant & bar that locals visit. The rooms were of a good size – note the higher floor rooms had just been refurbished.

Our final hotel visit was the Inn at the Spanish Steps , this was more unusual as it isn’t a hotel as such, the rooms or apartments are above the shops on the main thoroughfare overlooking the Spanish Steps and the main shopping streets. The Inn has various rooms dotted about a central area where there are about a dozen or so of rooms/apartments, a small guest area where breakfast is served and where there is snacks and drinks available for guests throughout the day.

The journey to the airport takes about 30-40 minutes depending on traffic, the airport was well organised and after passport control there is a high standard of duty free shops and Gelateria for the last ice cream before you leave the Eternal City.

Yvonne’s truly wonderful adventure to Brazil

I flew with TAP (Air Portugal) to Rio de Janeiro via Lisbon. The transfer from the airport to Copacabana Beach will take approx. 40 minutes. We stayed at the 4* Pestana Rio Atlantica hotel right in the centre of Copacabana Beach

About Rio de Janeiro

Our first adventure was to visit Corcovado – one of the Seven Wonders of the World – the iconic statue of Christ The Redeemer. To ascend the statue there is a comfortable train ride, the statue is 2.300 feet above sea level. The statue is huge & busy with people, but you should be able to find a space to take a picture of yourself with the statue and the panoramic views of Rio & Sugar Loaf Mountain.

We visited a number of hotels in Rio to inspect the standard of the hotels, their facilities and bedrooms .

Hotels visited were the Pestana, Hotel Porto Bay, The Windsor Hotel, the iconic Belmond Copacabana Palace & finally set up in the hills above Rio The Santa Teresa Hotel, a superb boutique hotel – this is where Amy Winehouse stayed whilst giving a concert in Rio.

Next day we visited the fabulous Sugar Loaf Mountain. Every year over one million visitors travel up the famous Pao de Acucar an iconic symbol of the city of Rio. You travel to the top in 2 glass cable cars. The views from Sugar Loaf Mountain are breath taking – I cannot describe in words how beautiful Rio looks from this point. Everyone must visit to see the position of Rio, the beaches, the city centre, the back drop of mountains behind. I think it’s the most beautiful place I have ever been to.

The following day we travelled 3 hours to Buzios, a gorgeous 20 beach resort, very European in style.

We stayed at the lovely Vila de Santa, I can highly recommend this hotel. The rooms were well appointed, in a great position and very friendly staff. I would certainly suggest a stay at Buzios for relaxation after a busy time touring.

Our next adventure was to fly to Iguacu Falls. All I can say is WOW ! Our visit happened when there was some heavy rainfall, so the rivers and the falls were a muddy brown colour, as there was so much rain the falls were much more forceful with increased water flow. The falls consist of over 270 that seem to stretch forever. We visited the Argentinian side of the falls, where you can catch a boat and go under the falls, you get soakingwet but the thrill is exhilarating. This trip is not for the faint hearted ! The Brazilian side of the falls is probably the most photographed as you can get up close to the falls, the most famous of these is called Devil’s Throat. To visit the Brazilian side of the falls there is a walkway and a few overhangs where you can be really close to the falls & get wet at the same time. At the end of the main walkway there is a lift to take you up to street level.

Situated in an incredible position is the Belmond Hotel Les Cateracts- the only hotel over the falls. The hotel has an old world charm that exudes style. I would recommend staying here for a night as guests can visit the falls before or after anyone else.

We stayed at Loi Suites Iguacu Hotel, a lovely hotel with a sub tropical jungle surrounding the hotel & beautiful swimming pools. The hotel was a 20 minute drive from the Falls, so in comparison a cheaper option than staying at the Belmond.

Our final night was spent in Brasilia, the capital. A modern city with modern buildings, quite purpose built, situated around a beautiful lake. We stayed at the Windsor Brasilia, which was a beautiful hotel. I don’t think the city merits a stop for tourists, as there are so many more interesting cities and places to visit. But for business travel this city has everything (apart from a beach !)

Fabulous holiday to St Lucia

We have just returned from a fabulous holiday to St Lucia . Please read my blog about the hotels I can recommend.

We travelled with Virgin Atlantic, outbound we flew Economy class, the seat was comfortable and the food was good. On the return journey we flew Premium Economy, it was certainly worth paying a bit more to travel this way, where you can reserve your seat before travel, the seat pitch, leg room was much bigger and of course, a smaller cabin, with priority check in, boarding the aircraft first and your luggage being one of the first ones off the aircraft.

Our Resorts in St Lucia

Our first stay was at the luxurious Ladera Resort just 25 minutes’ drive from the International Airport. This is a small intimate hilltop resort. Each suite has its own private swimming pool with swing chair with the most outstanding views of the incredible beauty of the Pitons. We stayed in a Paradise Suite which consisted of a 3 walled magnificent room with one open view over the Pitons. A huge 4 poster bed, with the largest bathroom I have ever been in with dressing area, 2 vanity units, huge shower and separate WC. In the main living area was a filled mini bar with Nespresso coffee machine, beautiful arrangements of flowers on a table with sun loungers and 2 easy comfy chairs.

At Ladera they have a small main swimming pool, reception area, spa, restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner; a bar with entertainment, a boutique. The gardens are truly exquisite with humming birds in abundance with all the substantial trees and plant life. Oprah Winfrey has stayed 3 times at Ladera we were informed. As it is situated on a mountain Ladera has no beach access but they have an arrangement with Sugar Beach Hotel, where there is a shuttle 4 times a day to use their beach from Ladera.

We had a beautiful room here with large king size bed again 3 walled so open to one side, a swing in the lounge area, even a tree growing out of our bathroom. Here they have a Treetop restaurant where breakfast is served and dinner plus a Vegetarian restaurant close to the bar & reception area and on the beach they have a large restaurant offering lunch and evening meals.

The food here was very good and very well presented. There are a steep numbers of steps from the reception area down to the beach. The beach was a dark coloured sand in a lovely bay with sunbeds and service on the beach. There was a good area where you could snorkel & see some beautiful fish. The spa is located on the beach close to the restaurant. There is a shop & art gallery on the beach too. You can walk over the headland to the beach at Jade Mountain, where you can use the facilities there. This hotel was excellent value as it is All Inclusive.

We visited Jade Mountain, an exclusive resort which is just above Anse Chastenet. This resort was very quirky, you would either love it or hate it. The views from the suites are spectacular, very spacious accommodation with infinity swimming pools and stunning architecture. Jade has one restaurant and bar and a beautiful sun deck. There is transport on demand to take you to the beach. There is a spa and boutique plus a chocolate factory. We made our very own chocolate bars at the factory, it was really good fun & something I would recommend to do.

Our next stop was to Windjammer Landing; this is a 4 * resort, this I thought was more American in style, again on an All Inclusive basis. There is a variety of accommodation on offer here from 1 bedroom suites through to large family villas. The resort is built up over a hillside with transfers being offered all the time 24 hours a day throughout the resort. There are various restaurants and bars in the resort & on the beach, with entertainment offered throughout the day & evenings. Families are welcome here, there are a couple of shops, tennis courts, gym & a beautiful spa.

Cap Maison boast they have the best food on the island & I can vouch to say it is excellent. Lunch can be taken on the beach at the Naked Fisherman – plenty of steps down so you must be fit. The resort was perfect in every way the gardens were stunning and the staff very efficient- can highly recommend a stay here.

There is so much going on I haven’t the space to write it, but be assured they can cater for everyone. In the centre of the resort they have a large buffet dining room, open air, a speciality Asian restaurant called TAO, an Italian plus a healthy option restaurant. Afternoon tea is served daily and they have a beach service. The rooms are smaller here than the other resorts I visited. Modern and clean, separate bath & walk in shower, small balcony. This resort was very well run, the staff were incredible, they worked hard and always had a smile on their faces, nothing was too much trouble & they engaged with their guests incredibly well.

This a couples only resort, older in style but with a very friendly and happy feel, again All Inclusive. Situated on a lovely beach, with plenty of sunbeds and beach service. Mix of accommodations here, lead in rooms have garden views, which were lovely, beachfront suites, which were larger & nearer the beach. We had a beachfront cottage – which I loved – quite compact but the large French windows went all the way back so you could sit outside with the sea right next to you and it was so quiet. Fantastic food here, there is French style restaurant, excellent buffet and a beach restaurant.

We had a fantastic time in St Lucia, we loved the island and its people. Everyone was very welcoming, polite, efficient & genuinely wanted to ensure everyone had a great time on the island.

Even the taxi drivers were super! For my clients I would perhaps recommend a 2 centre stay – peaks then beach. Dining was quite expensive so if this is an issue I would recommend staying on half board or choose an All Inclusive resort in St Lucia.

Prestige Holidays Agents Trip

I have just returned from a fantastic trip with Prestige to Newfoundland, which was hosted by Newfoundland & Labrador Tourism and Destination St. John’s and Legendary Coasts. It was a perfect opportunity to visit a part of Canada that I didn’t know existed… We stayed at the Sheraton Hotel which was in an excellent location. The area had the most beautiful coast line and with the weather being so good, everywhere looked so picturesque.

Apart from the historical sites we went on a Puffin and Whale tour but unfortunately we were just that little bit too late to see the whales but we did see the odd puffin or two. One of the main highlights for me was the Ferryland Lighthouse Picnic. We had a 1km walk uphill to the lighthouse , the walk was worth the effort but once up there the scenery was wonderful. We sat on the cliff side for our picnic which was beautiful. This is the most easterly restaurant in all of North America.

Upon arrival we were escorted by McCarthy’s Party to many historical sites such as Signal Hill National Historic Site which was the reception point of the first transatlantic wireless signal by Guglielmo Marconi in 1901, as well as the site of harbour defences for St. John’s from the 18t century to the second world war. From there we visited Vidi Plantation which is a craft incubation facility for the growth of emerging artists and their businesses. We also visited the Quidi Vidi Brewery where we had the pleasure of tasting various strengths of beer and of course get the history of the brewery.

I think this area of Canada would be a great place to visit if you were having a city trip to Toronto and then a 3 hour flight would bring you to St. John’s for a leisurely stay.

GoldenEye – Jamaica

Peter & I had a wonderful holiday at GoldenEye in Jamaica. The resort is situated on Orcabassa Bay, about 20 minutes from Ocho Rios. GoldenEye is a private resort; many famous stars like staying here because of its privacy and the island vibe it exudes being typically Jamaican.

The resort also has the Fleming Villa, GoldenEye used to be the home of Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond novels, hence the name GoldenEye. You can stay in this villa which is at one end of the resort, very private with its own small beach, garden, swimming pool, separate pool house and cottage. Sting stayed here and wrote his famous song, Every Breath You Take. This is also where the Kardashians stayed when they visited Jamaica. GoldenEye has 2 restaurants one a la carte, the Bizot Bar is the hub where you can enjoy a lazy breakfast, casual lunch and pre dinner drinks. The bar overlooks the swimming pools and the beach. There is a treetop spa which uses only natural products which is popular with guests. If you are lucky enough, Chris Blackwell, the owner and founder of Island Records will be at home, he is always interested in his guests and will make himself known & strike up a conversation with you.

There is plenty of water sports in resort, all included in the cost. Fishing is an extra cost but that was fun as we met with two locals, caught some fish, which we had cooked for us in resort, even managed to get close up and personal to dolphins. We even went turtle hatching on a nearby beach just before sunset, it was a wonderful experience, if you get the chance, do it – nature at its best.

Whilst in Jamaica we visited the sister property of Strawberry Hill. This is high up in the Blue Mountains overlooking Kingston, about an hour’s drive from GoldenEye. This is a perfect place to relax away from the beach, so perhaps a 2 centre with another resort would be appealing. It features a restaurant and swimming pool with spectacular scenery. The rooms are old fashioned, painted white with wooden 4 poster beds and furniture.

We visited Firefly – the final home of the famous Sir Noel Coward. Firefly is open to the public and is really worth a visit. His grave is overlooking the Spanish Main and you can visit the house and look round Noel’s collection of books, photos and artefacts. The house has not been touched since his death & looks nowadays very old fashioned and basic.

Classic Travel’s Trip to Cuba

I have just returned from a fantastic trip to Cuba, courtesy of Cuba Holidays. Columbus when he discovered Cuba said it was the most beautiful place he had seen – and he wasn’t wrong! It is the largest of the Caribbean islands with a diverse landscape of mountain ranges, tropical forests and stunning white sandy beaches. I visited Havana, the capital city, and further afield to Viñales, Trinidad, Remedios, Cienfuegos, Santa Clara & Varadero so have seen the diverse aspects of what Cuba has to offer.

Varadero is quite different from the towns I have mentioned above. It is mainly a contemporary All-inclusive 1980’s style resort with a large number of hotels dotted along a lovely sandy beach with a striking blue ocean. If you want to sit and flop & enjoy the sunshine the resort is perfect. I would recommend staying in Havana first then move on to the beach, either at Varadero or The Cayos. From April 2017 Virgin Atlantic will be offering flights to Varadero, so you could fly into Havana, then instead of the long transfer back to Havana you can fly home from Varadero. This, I think will increase and encourage tourists from the UK. All in all, I would recommend Cuba for a 2 centre holiday with a little culture mixed with sunshine and beach for the latter part of your holiday- a great combination.

Some facts you may or may not know about China:
There are around 6 million cars in Beijing Xian was the ancient capital of China. You can hire bicyles and ride around the top of the old City walls.

Top Tips
Take toilet paper with you. Not every public toilet has any. Also not all of the toilets are western style.
The food is good overall. You will be offered meat & vegetable dishes. In Sichuan Province the food can be spicy. Western style breakfasts are offered at the hotels. T
he guides speak English well and can help you with the language barrier.
English is taught in schools but is not widely spoken. Most people in hotels and tourist shops will speak some English. Finally if you visit China be prepared to be photographed. It will give you an idea of what it is like to be famous

Edward’s Crete Fam Trip with Cyplon Holidays

I have recently returned from Crete courtesy of Cyplon Holidays. Having been to Crete on two previous occasions on family holidays and with friends I was intrigued to go back once again. Luckily for me Chris and Stephanie from Cyplon were kind enough to give me an opportunity to go back and to re-visit the island in some style! Starting out early we flew directly from London Gatwick to Heraklion. Despite the weather’s best attempts to stop us, we arrived safely and checked into Aldemar Royal Mare. We began our hotel inspections at the sister hotel of the Royal Mare, the Knossos Royal.

The Knossos Royal is set within lovely well-kept grounds along a vast stretch of sandy beach, which unfortunately for us was spoilt somewhat by an uncharacteristically cloudy day. Despite this the luxurious, family and romantic feel of the hotel could still be felt. For families there are a number of room’s types which caters for various family types and ages with various board basis options. Coupled with the modern facilities you’d expect from a 5* hotel the Knossos also has Spa facilities, access to a nearby Golf Centre and transport to and from Hersonissos. With the various bars, lush scenery, beach access and events within the grounds you can spend a full holiday in the hotel and never leave once. Following our inspection we returned to the Royal Mare to freshen up before dinner and our planned inspection of the hotel. I was fortunate enough to be given a VIP Room with a sharing pool but sadly I had only a short amount of time to make use of the pool facilities but my room was exquisite. Where it’s sister hotel is geared for families and for parties, the Royal Mare quieter and focused on relaxation. This isn’t a bad thing but something one should be wary of when choosing between the two. Whilst sharing many of the qualities with Knossos the Royal Mare has twenty-five outdoor pools, Thalasso Spa treatments, tennis and squash courts and many other facilities which you would expect again from a 5* complex. The Royal Mare has a plethora of room types and dining options which compliment different family and group needs. My favourite part of the Mare was the easy access to the sea. Conveniently my room was close to the ocean front which meant I got some great photos of the beach. With the conclusion of dinner the group retired for the evening as our long first day came to a close.

Our first full day began early in the morning once again as we drove to Rethymnon, a busy coastal town I remember fondly having stayed in the area on holiday in the past. Our first hotel of the day was the Atlantis Beach Hotel. Situated on the beach and roughly 1.5km from town, you couldn’t find a much better located family beach hotel. The rooms have been recently refurbished and have been completed to a high standard giving a good base for days on the beach or in town. Spa treatments are available with a fitness suite and sauna. Having a half board dining option gives guests a chance to sample the best in Cretan food.

Moving into town the we were introduced to the Mythos Suites Hotel which is tucked away in the old town of Rethymnon. This family run boutique hotel; converted from a sixteenth century manor house, manages to retain all of its charm mixed with the modern amenities one would expect whilst carrying the warmth of a family run hotel. With only fifteen suites; all finished to a high standard, each room feels comfortable and homely. Traditional Cretan breakfast is served daily which gives guests ample opportunity to explore the town, dine out in the evening and stroll along the beach. For a sense of the real Crete I would highly recommend the Mythos hotel.

With only two site visits the group were treated to a walk around the old town and dined at a local taverna for a typical Cretan lunch. And this was followed up in the evening with dinner in a beach front taverna a short distance from the Royal Mare.

Tuesday saw us drive to Elounda which is located on the northwest coast of the island. Known for its harbour and beautiful surroundings we made our way to the Porto Elounda Gold and Spa Resort.

Probably the most obvious and compelling feature of this hotel is the golf and spa facilities. Unique to the area, the resort has a nine-hole, par-three golf course and putting green. Quickly you can work out that hotel is in many ways perfect for families as you something for parents and children, with quality golfing amenities, spa treatments and kid’s club. There is good access to Elounda and the private beach for those who need the sun and sea. All rooms have a sea view which is really quite special; you can see why such high profile guests like Gareth Bale have stayed at the hotel in the last two years.

Moving around the bay we strolled across the grounds to inspect the Elounda Peninsula Suite Hotel. Immediately you’ll be knocked back by the views of two bays. These views are capitalised on by all suites having sea view rooms; a common theme between the surrounding hotels. The property has its own gourmet restaurant; for breakfast and fine dining, and has cross over with the other hotels on the bay. This means that guests staying at the Peninsula can use the facilities offered at the adjoining Golf and Spa.

Following our inspections we made our way to the outstanding Domes of Elounda. I would suggest that was the highest standard of hotel that we visited during our time in Crete. It operates within the realms of supreme luxury for families and couples. Sadly I can’t comment on the standard rooms as they were all occupied at the time (always a good sign to me) but we were given a tour of the complex. Built on a hilly incline we were whisked around the hotel on golf karts; similar to the Royal Mare, but this doesn’t detract from the quality of the facilities or décor or the hotel’s main buildings. With a plethora of facilites,dining and entertainment, the Domes of Elounda epitomises the old meets new which can be found over the island of Crete. With brilliant views of the Islet of Spinalonga you have a perfect blend of traditional Crete and modern luxury.

After a short transfer we arrived in Plaka, a typical Cretan village, which overlooks the medieval fortress of Spinalonga. On the hillside we took a closer look at the Blue Palace. Much like the Domes the modern versus the classical can be witnessed in its design. Both have the facilities to keep you busy and to relax yourself during your stay. Many of the rooms have a direct view of the bay and Spinalonga, which during sunset is really something to behold. With our busy day coming to a close the group completed the short journey to Agio Nikolaos where we dined at the St.Nicolas Bay Resort Hotel & Villas. Leaving the Royal Mare for the penultimate time we drove across the island to Heraklion. Over the years the new leaders of the city have been working hard to improve the city and make it as appealing as its neighbours. Whilst this has been done to a degree there are parts of the city still needing some tender loving care. The Aquila Atlantis Hotel is an example of an oasis located in the centre of the city. With tremendously decorated rooms and main restaurant the Atlantis is highly sought after and noted as the best city hotel in all of Crete. However I would suggest that you use this hotel as a stopover as you travel further towards the east or west of the island, in the future Heraklion could become a city break itself but not at this time, it pains me to say otherwise. Located close to Heraklion is the Agapi Beach Hotel situated in Ammoudara, the scene of our next inspection. Being a classic family, beach and all- inclusive complex it has everything a family or group could want from a summer holiday. With three pools, beach access, a good location to explore the town and various room types to accommodate all guests who may be more budgeted restricted or travelling with a large family. Whilst we were there, our hosts made us feel very welcome with drinks and fruit after the completion of our tour which was most welcome on such a hot day.

The group’s last site inspection of the trip saw us arrive at the Knossos Beach Bungalows & Suites in Kokkini Hani. In close contention with the Mythos and the Domes for my recommended hotels, Knossos Beach has one-hundred and thirty-five rooms all featuring a balcony and terrace. It has access to a private sandy beach, two pools and other sports activities. The design whilst simple also emits classic Cretan design with the white buildings built along a clean sandy beach. Whilst family orientated for families it has a touch of class and family and couples will love it.

Our afternoon was spent at the Lliostasi Museum in Chersonissos which has been dedicated to depicting and educating guests how Cretan life was and how it has changed over time. After our whistle-stop tour of the museum our schedule was completed and our final evening was spent with the group having a well-deserved break before out gourmet dinner in the Royal Mare. Going back to Crete was a joy, despite detailing in this blog what hotels we saw and where we travelled the group was a real joy to be around which made the whole experience a great one. Revisiting places you once explored as a child can sometimes spoil the nostalgia of some memories.

Thankfully in this case my good memories remain intact! Despite the tough times the Greek people have faced recently, we were welcomed wherever we visited with genuine warmth and friendliness. Chris and Stephanie were fantastic hosts and showed great passion and knowledge for the places we visited and I both commend and thank them for their hospitality.

Prestige Holidays Agents Trip

I have just returned from a fantastic trip with Prestige to Newfoundland, which was hosted by Newfoundland & Labrador Tourism and Destination St. John's and Legendary Coasts.

It was a perfect opportunity to visit a part of Canada that I didn't know existed…

We stayed at the Sheraton Hotel which was in an excellent location.

The area had the most beautiful coast line and with the weather being so good, everywhere looked so picturesque.

Upon arrival we were escorted by McCarthy's Party to many historical sites such as Signal Hill National Historic Site which was the reception point of the first transatlantic wireless signal by Guglielmo Marconi in 1901, as well as the site of harbour defences for St. John's from the 18t century to the second world war. From there we visited Vidi Plantation which is a craft incubation facility for the growth of emerging artists and their businesses. We also visited the Quidi Vidi Brewery where we had the pleasure of tasting various strengths of beer and of course get the history of the brewery.

After much eating and drinking we went to Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site which is the oldest surviving lighthouse is served as the chief approach light for St. John's harbour since 1836. On our final day, we visited a beautiful little harbour called “Petty Harbour” at Chafe's Landing where we had lunch right by the waters edge.

I think this area of Canada would be a great place to visit if you were having a city trip to Toronto and then a 3 hour flight would bring you to St. John's for a leisurely stay.

GoldenEye – Jamaica

Whilst in Jamaica we visited the sister property of Strawberry Hill. This is high up in the Blue Mountains overlooking Kingston, about an hour's drive from GoldenEye. This is a perfect place to relax away from the beach, so perhaps a 2 centre with another resort would be appealing. It features a restaurant and swimming pool with spectacular scenery. The rooms are old fashioned, painted white with wooden 4 poster beds and furniture.

Classic Travel’s Trip to Cuba

I have just returned from a fantastic trip to Cuba, courtesy of Cuba Holidays.

Edward’s Paris Excursion with DoSomethingDifferent

After being thoroughly spoiled, the group and I boarded the train and begun our journey. Taking into account for a ten minute delay and going forward an hour as we entered France we arrived at our destination of Disneyland Paris at around two in the afternoon. Keen to get going we dropped off our luggage and headed straight into the park to make the most of our afternoon there. Opting to stay together we managed to get onto a number of rides and attractions with the Pirates of the Caribbean Ride, the Ratatouille adventure ride and Small World being the highlights for myself. I even managed to surprise myself when I joined the others on the Indian Jones ride. My family and friends all know that I am a bit useless on rollercoasters (even the tame one’s) so when I survived and enjoyed the rollercoaster which had a full loop, I felt very pleased with myself.

The good vibes continued throughout the afternoon with everyone in high spirits heading into dinner at Planet Hollywood. With our time in Disney at an end and being well fed and watered, our first day in Paris was brought to a close with a viewing of the Disney fireworks show, a spectacular end to a spectacular day. We spent the night in the Relais Spa D’Europe; just outside Disney, which provided a comfortable and fresh room and a moderate buffet breakfast.

For our first full and final day in Paris our rested group made our way to La Valle, to experience a Chic shopping experience. We were warmly welcomed by the staff with drinks, a light lunch and a presentation of the many shops and services provided by the outlet. As VIP guest we were given access to the lounge area, a twenty-five Euro gift card and a Starbucks Coupon. Whilst many of our group took full advantage of the discounted top-end brand shopping, I was more reserved and took advantage of the VIP lounge experience. As an extension to a Paris holiday or a trip to Disney, the shopping experience at La Valle fits the bill for both types of holidays. Whilst somewhat wasted on me, keen shoppers and bargain hunters could easily spend a whole day shopping at the various stores.

With our shopping done, we made the short transfer to the Westminster Hotel which is located in close proximity to the Place Vendome and the Opera. Offering a unique stay, each room is individually decorated with antique furniture and spa facilities. However the group and I didn’t have long to admire the hotel’s interior, as we had to have a quick turnaround to make it in time for our evening plans. As the sunset we made our way to the Port de la Bourdonnais to partake in river cruise up and down the Seine with Bateaux Parisian. Whilst on board for only a short time we were treated to a delicious three-course meal and copious amounts of wine to enjoy the sight-seeing trip. Booking a boat trip is a great way to see the different sights in Paris and there are a number of scheduled departures over the course of an evening so there is room for planning an evening. We took part in the earlier cruise because our evening was not over.

Despite being only a short two day trip, I thoroughly enjoyed myself as I think the rest of the group did. I would like to thank Lucy and Caroline from DoSomethingDifferent for their hospitality and allowing me onto the trip despite the short notice. Edward visits Sri Lanka – Kuoni Conference 2015

I have recently returned from the first Kuoni agent partner conference held in Sri Lanka. On Sunday 14 ^th of June I met up with the other delagtes who were invited to join the six day itinerary. We flew out of Heathrow terminal three with Sri Lankan Air; being my first time with the airline, I can confidently say that the ten hour plus flight time will seem a lot shorter with the entertainment system onboard. Free to use for every passenger, you’ll be hard pressed to find something you couldn’t enjoy and help pass the time. The service was of a good standard as you would expect however there could be a wait for the washroom!

Arriving safely the following morning, the group was transferred to Colombo where we met with the Kuoni trade team at the 5* Cinnamon Grand. The hotel was of a high standing; as it has a deserved 5* rating, but I would suggest that it isn’t suitable for stays longer than a couple of nights. Staying at the Grand would be best suited for the beginning or end to a trip and those looking for somewhere to stay with a short transfer time to the airport.

Following a long first day, the conference formally begun with an introduction by Jeremy Skidmore acting as our moderator. Throughout the day we heard from various dignitaries such as Amanda Darrington from Kuoni, Dr. Rohantha Athukorala from Sri Lanka Tourism, Vasantha Leelanda from the John Keells group and Sunimal Senanayake from the Leisure group. All spoke passionately about their respective organisations and their time and efforts were appreciated by the group.

Unique to this conference was that we were able to hear a debate between three British based agents talk about their experiences in travel; the highs and lows of the industry, the state of travel today and their partnerships with Kuoni. Peter Giles, Jeanne Lally and Nick Marks performed with distinction and provided an insight into the business practices and problems other fellow agents have to overcome.
Probably the highlight of the day; other than lunch, was our guest speaker Barry Morris. An ex-marine and Kuoni customer, Barry spoke to us about his life and association with Kuoni. Barry has had an extraordinary life (so far), but has managed to overcome many trials and tribulations to get to where he is today but remains a positive force for good. Having an eye for adventure, Barry has used Kuoni exclusively for a number of adventures down the years. Highlighting Kuoni’s ability to tailor make excursions and provide help and support to book the trips Barry wanted to undertake. It was a privilege to hear about his harrowing story and an inspiration to those dealing with issues and still having the will to explore and live.

With the conclusion of the conference the group attended a Gala Dinner and award ceremony hosted by Kuoni on-board along the Cinnamon Lakeside. Many agents were recognised for their efforts over the course of the last year. A grand ending for a grand day!

Now that the Kuoni conference had finished, the group which consisted of around thirty delegates were split up into three separate groups which followed their own itinerary. These groups were Wildlife, East Coast and my assigned group Adventure. With the group now split up the real Sri Lanka experience could begin.

Team Adventure began their time together by taking part in white water rafting in Kithulgala. Being my first time I was a little nervous, but as we got into the water the anticipation and adrenaline kicked in and we were flying down the river in no time. Reconvening after lunch we made the journey Nuwara Eliya and checked into the Jetwing St. Andrews and enjoyed high Tea at the hotel. Much the like the Grand in Colombo, St. Andrews is a quality hotel with a traditional style with the modern amenities you would expect. It would be a great starting off point for a group or tour into the forest and hills or a comfortable conclusion to one before a longer transfer back to the airport.

The following day we left St. Andrews in the early hours to embark upon a breath-taking trip of the Horton Plains. For you who don’t know the Plains is a National Park situated in the central highlands of Sri Lanka covered by grassland and a cloud forest. It is a protected area which is rich in biodiversity and has many species which are unique to the region. Despite this being very true we were greeted on our trek by lashing rain and wind which made the trek ever more difficult than expected. However after a break in the weather we made good time and completed the course of the trek all in one piece.
With the trek out of the way began our transfer to Kandy; one of Sri Lanka’s major cities, and enjoyed lunch at the Earl Regency Hotel. Following a short break for lunch we checked into the Cinnamon Citadel. Like the afore mentioned hotels the Citadel fulfils its function of providing comfort and good facilities for those staying for a short duration. The hotel does have the benefit of being situated on a beautiful hillside location and its terraces overlooking the river. That evening we dined at a local restaurant overlooking the city.

Our final day as the adventure group proved to be a busy day. We checked out of the Citadel and made the short trip over to the Temple of the Tooth, a sacred site within Buddhism where it is believed that the Buddha’s tooth resides. Two ceremonies are carried out over the course of the day and scores of people come to the temple to take part in and meditate. Sadly for us it was too busy to see the casket where the tooth is thought to live.

Following a stroll around the temple and enjoying the ambiance we skipped lunch so that we could make a quick getaway from Kandy to the Geragama Tea Estate. We undertook a tour of the plantation witnessing the tea creating process which was fascinating as I am a tea drinker myself it’s always nice to see where things come from!
Before taking the last leg of our whistle stop tour to the Jetwing Sea Hotel, we made a detour to an elephant orphanage. For a long time I’ve wanted to see and meet an elephant and finally I got to meet dozens of them as they thundered along the road and into the nearby river. It was an amazing sight to see so many of them together, washing and playing with each other! It’s something I will never forget and luckily took plenty of photos to help me do that.

Despite being a short trip, Kuoni’s first Summit was a rousing success. The conference was well planned and executed perfectly, the other delegates were a delight to meet; as I know many good friendships have been formed as a result, and the adventure itinerary was paced well for our team who were up for everything.
I learnt a lot about Kuoni and travel as a result and have returned back to work armed with even more knowledge which I’m ready and able to pass on to colleagues and potential clients. I would like to congratulate and thank the Kuoni team for everything and I hope to be asked again next year, even if it’s a bit closer to home!

Paris Excursion with Do Something Different

In July 2015 I was fortunate enough to be invited to join a number of lucky agents in Paris with DoSomethingDifferent. Starting early on a Wednesday morning I met the other agents at London St Pancras as we boarded the Eurostar. Being my first ever time on the high-speed train I was excited to compare the experience with coach and air travel. To make up for the early start Lucy and Caroline; the DSD representatives, organised for us the chance to enjoy the Eurostar’s Business Premier Lounge. Getting up at 6am with defiantly compensated with free of charge latte’s, croissants and newspapers. After being thoroughly spoiled, the group and I boarded the train and begun our journey. Taking into account for a ten minute delay and going forward an hour as we entered France we arrived at our destination of Disneyland Paris at around two in the afternoon. Keen to get going we dropped off our luggage and headed straight into the park to make the most of our afternoon there. Opting to stay together we managed to get onto a number of rides and attractions with the Pirates of the Caribbean Ride, the Ratatouille adventure ride and Small World being the highlights for myself. I even managed to surprise myself when I joined the others on the Indian Jones ride. My family and friends all know that I am a bit useless on rollercoasters (even the tame one’s) so when I survived and enjoyed the rollercoaster which had a full loop, I felt very pleased with myself.

After a short ride on the Metro we arrived at Blanche to watch arguably the most famous cabaret show in the world, Moulin Rouge. Another first time experience for me, I was blown away by some of the routines exhibited during the show. It’s an experience I would recommend to anyone who would be willing to give it a try. Still in an upbeat mood the group closed out the evening and our time in Paris with a lengthy night cap at a lovely piano bar close to the Westminster.
On our return on the Eurostar we enjoyed the equivalent of premium economy as we entered back into St. Pancras which included a meal and drinks on-board which provided the perfect tonic to the previous night’s endeavours.

Yvonne’s Anguilla Adventure – May 2015

My Carribbean adventure got off to a great start when our group was lucky enough to be upgraded to travel Club Class on the British Airways flight to and from Antigua. The flight was very comfortable and travelling Club Class makes the journey so much more enjoyable. From the UK it is best to fly into Antigua & then take a private charter flight to Anguilla into Clayton J Lloyd International Airport, Anguilla. Being a small airport there were no queues & were whisked away to the Viceroy Hotel in minutes.

We stayed at the Viceroy Anguilla a beautiful 5 * hotel on the beach at Barnes and Meads Bay. This hotel offers something for everyone, adults & families will love it here. The Viceroy has private villas overlooking Barnes Bay but have the added benefit of being in the grounds of the hotel to use any of the hotel facilities. The main hotel has luxurious rooms and suites most with private sun deck and plunge pool.

The Anguilla Tourist Board looked after us throughout our visit and gave an island tour to visit the stunning beaches and restaurants for us to recommend to our clients. We had a site inspection of a new resort which is due to open early in 2016 called Zemi Beach , watch this space for an update of this stunning resort. We visited Ce Blue Resort at Crocus Bay a small complex of villas situated on the hillside. The same afternoon we visited a private villa called Villa Kishti right on Meads Bay, a fantastic villa in an exclusive location right on the beach. For dinner we headed to the Straw Hat Restaurant, which was fun with great food.

We were given a viewing of the most stunningly beautiful and the most expensive villa I have ever been to called, Cerulean Villa . If you have a spare $250,000 you can enjoy immense luxury for a week’s stay. Robert de Niro has holidayed here so if you are keen to find out more about Cerulean Villa give me a call. We had lunch and a tour of Ani Villas , these are 2 villas next door to each other, one of the villas is the only disabled access villa on Anguilla, it even had a hoist to enter the swimming pool. For the last few nights we were treated to a stay at a private villa called Le Bleu , this villa was very relaxing with every amenity you could think of, private chef, housekeeper and staff all pampering to our every whim. Call me so I can tell you about the difference between holidaying in a hotel to a private villa.

We visited Cap Juluca Hotel , this has always been popular with the Brits situated on Maundays Bay, but for me I was slightly disappointed in the furnishings of this hotel. We were lucky enough to spend 2 nights staying at the Malliouhana Hotel – Wow what a welcome and such a beautiful hotel, I can certainly recommend this resort, bright Caribbean colours with stunning décor & service. We visited the Cuisinart Golf Resort & Spa situated on one of Anguilla’s best beaches at Rendezvous Bay, this hotel is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, I think that says it all ! We had a superb lunch at the Clubhouse at the Golf Club. If you want golf and a spa, look no further this resort is the one for you!

Restaurants I can recommend are – Jacala at Meads Bay, this was probably the best meal we had after Cuisinart. Veya restaurant at Sandy Ground. DaVida Bay Side Grill lovely for an informal lunch right on the beach . Sandbar at Sandy Ground, the place to be for restaurants and night life.

For a bit of fun we had a traditional sailing experience on a barefoot sundowners sail, I could highly recommend this excursion. We also went to Scilly Cay for lunch, this is a tiny island from a beach you take a very short boat ride across the bay to get to it.
Other hotels we inspected were the Anacona Boutique Hotel & Frangipani Beach Resort – call me for more information on these hotels.

Edward visits Sri Lanka – Kuoni Conference

I have recently returned from the first Kuoni agent partner conference held in Sri Lanka. On Sunday 14th of June I met up with the other delagtes who were invited to join the six day itinerary. We flew out of Heathrow terminal three with Sri Lankan Air; being my first time with the airline, I can confidently say that the ten hour plus flight time will seem a lot shorter with the entertainment system onboard. Free to use for every passenger, you’ll be hard pressed to find something you couldn’t enjoy and help pass the time. The service was of a good standard as you would expect however there could be a wait for the washroom! Arriving safely the following morning, the group was transferred to Colombo where we met with the Kuoni trade team at the 5* Cinnamon Grand. The hotel was of a high standing; as it has a deserved 5* rating, but I would suggest that it isn’t suitable for stays longer than a couple of nights. Staying at the Grand would be best suited for the beginning or end to a trip and those looking for somewhere to stay with a short transfer time to the airport.

For our stay, we were warmly welcomed by the hotel with a fascinating dance performance in the traditional style at the hotel’s Nuga Gama Restaurant. Our first day closed with a meal and informal instructions to our fellow conference delegates. Following a long first day, the conference formally begun with an introduction by Jeremy Skidmore acting as our moderator. Throughout the day we heard from various dignitaries such as Amanda Darrington from Kuoni, Dr. Rohantha Athukorala from Sri Lanka Tourism, Vasantha Leelanda from the John Keells group and Sunimal Senanayake from the Leisure group. All spoke passionately about their respective organisations and their time and efforts were appreciated by the group.

Probably the highlight of the day; other than lunch, was our guest speaker Barry Morris. An ex-marine and Kuoni customer, Barry spoke to us about his life and association with Kuoni. Barry has had an extraordinary life (so far), but has managed to overcome many trials and tribulations to get to where he is today but remains a positive force for good. Having an eye for adventure, Barry has used Kuoni exclusively for a number of adventures down the years. Highlighting Kuoni’s ability to tailor make excursions and provide help and support to book the trips Barry wanted to undertake. It was a privilege to hear about his harrowing story and an inspiration to those dealing with issues and still having the will to explore and live. With the conclusion of the conference the group attended a Gala Dinner and award ceremony hosted by Kuoni on-board along the Cinnamon Lakeside. Many agents were recognised for their efforts over the course of the last year. A grand ending for a grand day! Yvonne’s Mexico Blog – 2014

I was lucky enough to be invited on the Caribtours educational visit to Mexico. We stayed at a variety of wonderful hotels and visited many more. We travelled out with Virgin Atlantic Premium Economy class for the 10 hour direct service to Cancun, we sampled the V Lounge at Gatwick Airport and viewed Upper Class on the flight.
We were treated like royalty at the Fairmont Mayakoba, where we stayed for 2 nights. This hotel is situated on the Riviera Maya, 10 minutes from Playa del Carmen. This hotel is unique in that it is built around mangroves, the beach, and a golf course, the resort is perfect for all ages and with the legendary Fairmont standard you have it all. The resort had 5 swimming pools, 3 restaurants, children’s club and a fab spa. If you want a bit of Mexican authenticity you won’t go far wrong with Dreams situated in Tulum. Just a few minutes drive from the Tulum ruins- which is a must see!

Fairmont Mayakoba beach…

We stayed at Paradisus Playa dele Carmen La Perla with its sister hotel , La Esmerelda, both are all inclusive hotels. La Perla is adults only so if you want a busy, high class hotel with every facility this is the one for you. Next door is La Esmerelda, which is fabulous for families with very spacious accommodation.What a treat- we stayed at Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa, this is a delightful boutique hotel, with an authentic Mexican experience. Fabulous location with rooms to match and the staff work hard to make sure every guest has a wonderful time. Secrets Maroma Beach is just further along the beach from the Belmond a large hotel with every facility can recommend this hotel.

Paradisus Playa Del Carmen – La Perla hotel room…

Other hotels we visited were Esencia- a small hotel on a lovely beach. The Viceroy Riviera Maya an adult only hotel in a jungle setting, super rooms and friendly staff here. The Royal Hideaway is near Playa del Carmen with a grand entrance has a colonial feel about this hotel, will accept children from teenagers, so no young children here. Zoetry Paraiso de la Bonita, a very Mexican feel to this hotel and rooms. Our final night was a drive up to Cancun to stay for a night at Le Blanc Spa Resort, as the name suggests a very white hotel, superb location on a gorgeous beach. The rooms are quirky and modern with TV’s in their bathroom mirrors. There is a fantastic spa here which is popular with guests. Cancun Airport is modern and efficient. It has a large duty free area with bars and restaurants all very compact so no long walks to the departure gates.

Edward’s Turkey Familiarisation Trip – with Anatolian Sky

My latest Fam trip saw myself and a group of other agents be taken away to Turkey courtesy of Anatolian Sky. Departing early on Saturday morning we arrived into Dalaman airport where we were transferred to the Petunya Konak based in Icmeler.
Situated just outside of the main town the boutique hotel benefits from the quiet tranquillity of the hillside which allows it to be undisturbed by the hustle and bustle of Icmeler. With a clean and attractive décor guests looking for a quiet retreat can find this in the Konak but can alternatively use the establishment as a base of exploration. Due to our exertions early in the day the first afternoon of the trip was given to us to spend how we wished. I used this time to explore Icmeler briefly before returning to the Konak for a traditional Turkish meal which concluded the day.

Our first full day in Turkey proved to be a busy one. After checking out of the Petunya we made explored Icmeler’s beach and resort areas. Soon after we made a number of site visits in Akyaka. Firstly we inspected the Azmakhan Hotel. Like the Petunya the hotel is situated among a mountainous backdrop alongside the Azmak River providing some genuinely beautiful scenery. Aside from the unspoilt scenic background the Azmakhan provides all rooms with balconies or terraces which enjoy views of the area. Meals at the hotel can be eaten outside – which at night provides both a charming and romantic atmosphere especially by the riverside.
Moving from Azmakhan we had a guided tour around the Merve Han Residence which is a short ten-minute stroll from the Akyaka resort. It’s bright and pretty exterior is carried on within the inside of the hotel with white walls and classic wooden balconies. The swimming pool; located at the front of the hotel, is a good size with an adjoining children’s swimming pool eases the amount of navigating one has to do.
The final hotel inspection of the day saw our group of agents arrive at the Yucelen Hotel & Gencel Apartments. Designed in the local Mugla style the Yucelen is bound within a stream home to many fish and turtles and it’s luscious gardens. The hotel has recently refurbished its family rooms to an excellent standard which have proven to be very popular in the recent season, so to avoid disappointment families should book well in advance! Our tour concluded with a lunch break at the Yucelen – after which we continued on our little mini-bus to the Dalyan resort. Our evening was spent freely before dining at the Calypso Plus.

Early the next day our group was shown around the Dalyan resort; having already spent the previous night there, I would recommend the resort. Separated into three accommodation blocks the hotel is designed to an impeccable clean standard with two pools. I had a ground floor room; next to the pool, which was both modern but carried over a boutique style. The spa includes a variety of packages which a number of my group tried and reported back positively.
Checking out of the Dalyan we made the trip to the Keskin Hotel which is an attractive hotel surrounded like many of the hotels we visited by mountainous scenery. The large stretched of gardens and swimming pools is popular with families and those who love the outdoors. Aside from the grounds, the hotel is superbly located as it is within ten minutes’ walk of the Dalyan town and a thirty minute transfer from Dalaman Airport.
Our full tour of the Calypso was completed after having dinner there the previous night and the hotel is even more striking in the day light. Like the Keskin the Calypso is bound within luscious gardens and pathways leading towards the river. Even in the cooler autumn sun you could imagine spending the afternoon reading or dining on the riverside in the height of summer. The rooms sport a traditional Turkish design ranging from standard rooms to suite rooms.
Our final site visit of the day was carried out at the Montana Boutique. Going by its name the Montana offers not only a refreshing boutique exterior but it has a warm and intimate interior with an ideal five minute walk from Dalyan town centre. The reclusive feel of the hotel allows families and couples alike to rest and relax by the pool or explore the town. From my perspective the Montana doesn’t have so much facility wise but for a relaxing and quiet hide away then few do it better than the Boutique.
With the completion of our tour we moved on towards Gocek and checked into the stylish D-Resort Hotel. The hotel is suitable for families and for honeymooning couples who are looking a luxurious accommodation situated just a short walk away from the village of Gocek. Taking on a chic style the rooms at the D-Resort are decorated with Mediterranean colours and are finished to a high standard. My favourite aspect of the hotel was the availability of bicycles and golf buggies to travel to and from the local village and the long sandy beach of Gocek. Our overnight stay was complimented with dinner on the beach-side restaurant.

Arriving at the midpoint of our week-long tour the two groups met up to have a tour around the stylish and charming Yacht Classic. The Classic has its own private waterfront with Jacuzzi and duel swimming pools for adults and children. Some of the rooms have sea views but these are not guaranteed to all the rooms in the hotel and are available upon request. For 2014 the hotel has constructed five spacious luxury rooms; called “villas”, with their own sharing pool. If I was to visit Fethiye I would look to stay in the Classic and would highly recommend it to clients and friends.

After spending a second day and evening in Fethiye the group were itching to visit Kalkan. Known as a harbour town with the classic flavours of Turkey, Kalkan is a great base for exploring the surrounding area which is rich with history. Over the course of the day we visited many hotels in the Kalkan area such as the Asfiya, Exlixir, the Rhapsody and finally staying in the Oasis.
The Oasis Hotel is an adult only hotel which offers an intimate, boutique styled safe haven with rooms decorated to high standard. During our stay my room-mate and I were fortunate enough to be given a garden terrace deluxe suite with private swimming pool which we utilised to its full extent! Where normally guests would be utilising the sun loungers and dining on the roof top a la carte restaurant, unfortunately during our two nights we were subject to thunder storms and heavy showers which admittedly detracted from the exploration. On Friday afternoon a months’ worth of rain fell on Kalkan and the surrounding area which cancelled our excursion to the Sunken City of Kekova which would have been a fitting way to end the week long fam trip.

Despite being in Turkey for only a week I felt that the group and I covered a lot of ground and learnt a lot about the vast and historical land of Turkey. Obviously I’ve limited myself to speaking briefly about the hotels I inspected and my views on them so if you’d like to know more about Turkey and Anatolian Sky products don’t hesitate to call us or drop us an e-mail using the links on our site.

Diane’s Barbados Educational Visit – June 2014

The theme of my recent trip to Barbados with the Barbados Tourist Authority was “this is how I enjoy me life!” and for a few days we did enjoy all that Barbados has to offer. The other days were spent looking at hotels on the South & West coasts. The island has something to offer everyone with lovely beaches, water sports shops, nightlife and hotels for all budgets.

On our first day we visited the Concorde experience Here we saw a short film before we boarded the aircraft. Our next stop was the Boatyard. Here you can spend the day on the beach, buy drinks ,have food and try numerous water sports. Our final trip of the day was a cruise aboard the Jammin catamaran. The attentive crew ensured that drinks were available all day as we sailed up the west cost of the Island. Two stops were made and on the first there was the opportunity to snorkel with turtles. Before entering the water we spotted a large fish that looked like a shark, we were assured it was only a tarpon so dived in warily. Food was served at the second stop with a choice of meat or fish. On the way back we were all dancing on the deck lead by the crew.

The next 2 days were spent looking at hotels. 17 in total.

On the first day my favourite hotels were The Crane and Oceans 2. The Crane has a village feel with shops, restaurants and a village square. The grounds are spacious and well tended. You have a choice or pools and a large jacuzzi with sea views. There is a lift or stairs leading to the beach, which has been voted one of the best in Barbados. There are a variety of rooms and some have a kitchenette. Ocean 2 is a beachfront property with modern rooms and kitchenettes. It also benefits from a roof terrace and pool where the managers cocktail party is held. It also offers great views. Should you want to go out for the evening, restaurants and bars are easily accessible.

The second day was spent looking at hotels on the West coast. The sea is noticeably calmer here.Each hotel is different and will appeal to all types of holidaymaker. There is Sandy Lane offering ultimate luxury. With a wonderful spa golf & restaurants. The Colony Club had a lovely feel as you walked into the open reception area. The buildings are only 2 storeys high and scattered around the gardens. There is a choice of pools and some rooms have their own steps down directly into one of the pools. They have also started growing their own vegetables to served in the restaurant. The honey and mint ice cream is delicious. The House is a small boutique hotel ideal for honeymooners.

Crystal Cove is a spacious hotel offered on an all inclusive basis. The pools are freeform and there is a waterfall bar. Rooms are scattered around the grounds with brightly coloured balconies. For children there is a great kids club. Our last full day was spent checking out the excursions on offer to visitors. Atlantis submarine was great. You are taken down to a maximum depth of 150 ft before seeing a ship wreck and the reef. On the reef there are corals and lots of fish. We were even lucky enough to see turtles. No trip to Barbados would be complete without visiting the famous Mount Gay rum factory. Here after a tour you are given tastings of 3 different rums.Lunch can also be taken here.

Barbados offers numerous dining options so you do not have to stay in your hotel. All budgets are catered for. We visited Naru which is a Pan Asian restaurant; the food here was beautifully presented and very enjoyable. There are also craft stalls and shops as well as duty free shopping if you can bear to be away from the beach.

Jackie’s Club Med Blog – Mauritius – La Pointe aux Canonniers – June 2014

Having recently returned from Club Med’s La Pointe aux Canonniers; based in Mauritius, I can only describe my experience as superb. Club Med have created stunning resorts which is supported by a team of attentive staff set against a stunning back drop which is the Mauritian beaches and mainland.

I must express that I had an excellent time at both resorts, if anything the stay was too short ! You really do need to give yourself enough nights to fully appreciate and experience all that a Club Med holiday has to offer. Despite our short time ; as a group, we made a real attempt at sampling and trying out as much as possible, even if that meant staying up until the early hours of the morning and giving our all to accomplish all the activities available at each resort.
The first resort we stayed in was the La Pointe aux Canonniers which is a manageable hour transfer from the airport. Upon arrival to La Pointe we were greeted warmly by a team of staff from the resort which added a nice touch to proceedings. In terms of layout the resort is impressively large with a sizeable meeting, sitting and lounge area which leads on to the bar and swimming pool areas.

On our walking tour of the site with the G.O’s I was touched by the pride and excitement exuded by the team about their resort and from first-hand experience I can really understand why. La Pointe is Club Meds four –trident resort in Mauritius, but for its rating in holds so many activities far too many to list at this time. Situated in close proximity to the Grand Baie, the resort hosts a multitude of water-sports including, water-skiing, sailing, surfing and many others. If you prefer to keep dry, one can make use of the spa, Tennis courts, and glass bottom boat trips or join in one of the many fitness classes or dine in one of the two Restaurants. Day trips; via boat, to the Plantation d’Albion are available.

Despite having so much to offer the resort is very compact allowing one to get around quickly and easily. The renowned Club Med “Kid’s Club” at La Pointe takes children from the ages of four months up until seventeen year olds. With superb facilities each age group is given access to facilities and amenities reflecting the individual child’s age, the children we met were thoroughly enjoying themselves.

The evening entertainment on offer is of a high quality. During our stay we watched the Theatre Show which was great fun and our group undertook an extensive tour of the nightclub which unfortunately carried on until the “wee” hours of morning on one particular night. This one evening culminated in me and the girls dancing on the beach under the stars. Being a travel agent is hard work some time right?

Plantation D’Albion

Following a sad farewell to our friends at La Pointe, we boarded a speedboat to Plantation D’Albion. During our short transfer we enjoyed the sun and scenery of the open seas and local islands, arriving to a lovely welcome from the staff of the Plantation D’Albion. From our arrival you could sense this is a much larger; dare I say, grander resort. Plantation D’Albion is gorgeous; simply put, taking a buggy around the resort we were shown many of the private beaches and locations one can snorkel and swim in.

The Resort is divided into three stunning villas with facilities ranging from golf, tennis, archery, circus school located at the top of the resort. In terms of room types the main deluxe and standard club rooms are located at the bottom of the resort which is in close proximity to the various spas, pools, bars and restaurants. The rooms I and the guest stayed in were beautifully decorated with their roll top baths and rainfall showers.

Plantation D’Albion has lots to offer for both adults and children as it caters well for families with its Children’s clubs from the ages of four to seventeen and the Zen Area Pool for adults only, thus giving the resort the perfect balance for all clients. D’Albion has no Water Skiing but has the Circus School which is great fun along with the sports mentioned earlier, I don’t think you’ll be bored or want to leave the resort at any time!

You can see that Club Med give plenty of time, effort and thought into the services and the overall standards of their resorts. There is always something going on and without any real issues or problems. Thank you Club Med for hosting me and my group. I hope that this brief look into what Club Med is and at the same time entices you into booking with Club Med in the near future.

Wow! What a trip!

I am fortunate enough to be able to write about my most recent trip to the Grenadines and St.Vincent with Caribtours and I must say what an experience it was! Travelling with a group of other esteemed agents we spent a week island hopping between Mustique, St.Vincent and Petit Saint Vincent.

On our outbound journey we were truly spoiled by travelling in club class which was a fantastic start to mine and rest of the group's adventure. Upon arrival in Barbados we boarded a small aircraft bound for Mustique which despite being quite a dainty aircraft it ran quite smoothly. Spending two nights at the Cotton House we enjoyed an informative and relaxing tour of the complex. I stayed in a beach-front room which had it's own plunge pool; all ready for a quick dip, before heading out into the sea. I would recommend this room type just for the wonderful feeling of waking up in the morning overlooking the sea in luxury! The estate has a total of seventeen rooms which can be seen as both a positive and negative aspect. Whilst availability maybe sacrificed, in return you get a tranquil, spacious and reclusive experience. Before we left Mustique we enjoyed a delectable beach picnic which the Cotton House arranged for us, a perfect ending to our brief stay.

From Mustique we sailed to the laid back island of Bequia, where we stayed at the Bequia Beach hotel. The Bequia Beach had a relaxed feel matching it's old fashioned furnishing and décor which permeated an authentic Caribbean ambience. On the island's mainland you can find approximately sixteen restaurants so there is plenty of choice and variation to be had. Being graced with beautiful beaches we found a perfect spot for a quick lunch break. After being given a tour of the complex we went out by ferry across to St.Vincent which took around an hour.

Upon arrival to St.Vincent we stayed two nights at Buccament Bay. This hotel is more well known for its sporting and activities such as “Pat Cash's Tennis Academy” and both Soccer and Cricket Academies. Putting that aside, this property is situated on a beautiful white sandy beach, which is put to good use by the hotel as it has a great bar where guests can have lunch cooked on the BBQ beside the pool and beach areas. Just off-site one can find a pastry and coffee shop where you will find a great selection of home made cakes, pastries and ice-creams. All of which were a perfect compliment to the heat. In the evening we enjoyed a beautiful fine dining experience in Jack's Restaurant which was also accompanied by a piano player and singer which only made the evening all the better. I could only just control myself not to join in and sing!

Soon after arriving we left Buccament Bay via plane to Union Island, which normally is a very short boat ride. Upon arrival we had a lunch at Palm Island located just to the south east of Union Island. Like most of the places we went to, Palm Island is graced with gorgeous white sandy beaches. Shortly after lunch we had a tour of the hotel of the same name which has forty-three rooms and village suites which encourages a relaxing feel, set in a rustic property.

We then took another boat transfer to Petit St.Vincent resort. To my mind, saving the best till last. Our group stayed two nights on this small island. Holding only twenty-two rooms the resort offers spacious cottages all constructed out of stonework. The complex is suitable for families, couples and singles with various room types all with large lounge areas, spacious bedrooms, beautifully decorated bathrooms and his and hers sinks.
On our final full day we undertook an excursion to Tobago Cays to snorkel with the turtles which was an amazing experience and something I would recommend doing as an additional feature to any itinerary. Don't forget your camera!

Being our last full day we spent the following day travelling home. But to finalise all I can say is “Wow” what a wonderful trip and experience my week was in the Grenadines. Edward’s Slovenia Fam Trip with Classic Collection 19th May – Friday 23rd May

Slovenia Fam Trip with Classic Collection

May 19th

In late May I was fortunate enough to be allowed onto a Fam Trip with Classic Collection to Slovenia. Our trip began early on Monday morning meeting Andrew from Classic at Stansted Airport. Promptly departing for Slovenia, the group used the short two hour flight as an opportunity to catch up with some much needed sleep. After touching down in Ljubljana we made our way to Bohinj as our first site inspection got under way at the Hotel Jezero. Located in beautiful natural surroundings; see the image below for proof, the Jezero is situated perfectly for adventurers and those looking for rest spite in a quiet location whilst operating on a modest budget.

Shortly after our tour of the Jezero we made our way to the picturesque town of Bled where we ceased travelling for the day by checking into the G H Toplice. Overlooking the lake; of the same name, we were treated to stunning views of the lake and its neighbouring mountains. The photo below was taken from my hotel room, which gives a clear indication why the Toplice is one of Classic Collection’s most popular hotels in the region.

Before we could rest and take in the stunning surroundings we were given a guided tour of the Hotel Lovec which was only a short walk up a modest incline from the Toplice.
Boasting comfortable and spacious rooms, the Lovec like most hotels around Bled are treated to stunning view of the lake and the mountainous terrain. For clients looking for a more relaxed atmosphere with accessibility to a grill restaurant and a traditional pub, should take a look at this hotel as an alternative to the Toplice. With the hotel visits finished for the day we retired to our rooms for a quiet afternoon and dinner in the Panorama restaurant.

20 ^th May

Following our one night in the Toplice we were given a tour early the next day. The Toplice is decorated to a high standard both within the rooms and lounge areas; it boasts a high level of current and past cliental such as Paul McCartney and Ban Ki-moon, coupled with attentive staff you can quickly understand why the Toplice is in such high demand.
With the hotel inspection completed our group drove to Bled Castle, one of the main attractions to see in the area. Whilst the castle was a treat in itself, the view of the surrounding area was the main attraction as you can see in the below photo. Simply beautiful!

Following a quick drink and ice-cream pit-stop we made our way to the capital city Ljubljana, checking into the Hotel Slon. Soon after arriving we dropped off our bags and strolled towards the GH Union Executive Hotel for a site inspection.
Located a brief walk away from the hub of the city, the Union uses its space wisely to provide spacious rooms with a tasteful decor. Whilst achieving this it still manages to remain true to the cities and hotels historic ancestry. On our tour we were proudly told that Queen Elizabeth the second herself stayed in the Union during her time in the city. The Union also has an adjoining business hotel which establishes both a contemporary and corporate space for those visiting the city on business rather than pleasure.

With site inspections finished for the day, we were taken on a tour of the city by our guide Aaron who showed us the real Ljubljana and its historical landmarks such as the various bridges which connect the city, such as the one below.

After a second busy day we had a delectable sea-food dinner in the Slon restaurant and retired to our rooms for the evening, not before sampling a few glasses of locally brewed Schnapps.

21 ^st May

After a slower start to the day we met our guide who took us on a hotel inspection of the Slon. Supporting a contemporary feel situated in the centre of the capital. The Slon is in a prime location for exploring the city, for those on a range of varying budgets. A particular highlight for me staying the one night was the bed. I know that it’s an odd thing to point out but I had a fantastic nights sleep and I believe that is was the bed spread which helped me.

With the tour completed, we left Ljubljana behind and made our way to Portoroz which is located on the slim coast of Slovenia neighboured by Croatia and Italy. Upon arrival we checked into the Hotel Kempinski and were immediately taken on a tour of the hotel.
Undoubtedly my preferred hotel of the whole tour, the Kempinski translates a regal style with a fresh and modern look. Rooms have both shower and bath facilities with accompanying balcony rooms. The food was of a high standard with friendly staff making the whole experience over the course of the two nights very enjoyable and relaxing, even though I was meant to be working I couldn’t help be sidetracked by the pool and bar!

Following our extensive inspection we were granted some free time which was mainly spent by the pool unashamedly. Following our rest we dined at a local restaurant followed by a few drinks of the locally brewed beer and schnapps. (Responsibly consumed).

22 ^nd May

On our last full day we undertook our last site inspection of the Grand Hotel Portoroz. The Grand hotel has been recently renovated and sports a clean and fresh look which combines well with the summer heat and coastal backdrop. Within the Grand there is an extensive Spa and treatment facility which takes pride of place among the other facilities. Within the booking package guests also have access to the Medusa beach, giving it an advantage over its neighbours.

With the last site inspection completed the group were given free reins to explore Portoroz at their own accord with some using the time to get re-acquainted with the pool and others taking a stroll around the local town. I elected to do both and found Portoroz to be a pleasant and charming place and somewhere to visit in the low and high seasons. Over the course of the last night, the Classic Collection group dined in the Kempinski which served a high quality meal leaving us all very satisfied and ready for the travelling which would see us head home the following day.

Flying back from Ljubljana airport the following day on the 23 ^rd the group and I were taken back by the splendour of Slovenia. Before our time with Classic Collection, none of us had any real idea of what Slovenia would be like but after our short stay we returned home armed with the experience and knowledge to assist clients and colleagues in leaning more about the country. Andrew from Classic Collection was a delightful host, coupled with a lively group making the whole experience both informative and enjoyable. I would like to thank Classic Collection for letting me onto the trip as I learnt a lot and hope to recommend Slovenia where possible in the future.

Karen’s Trip to Southern California with North America Travel Service

I have recently returned from a short but informative four day trip to Southern California with North America Travel Service.
Our first stop was the Ritz-Carlton: Marina Del Rey situated in west Los Angeles. The hotel had a calm and relaxed feel situated on the waterfront; with three-hundred and four rooms, many of which have been adapted to include disabled guests. Facilities wise the Ritz-Carlton included, a pool (with hoist for disabled guests), tennis and basketball courts and a fitness centre. It has two restaurants, one open all year round and the other positioned by the pool open from May. For those who can’t leave their pets behind on holiday would be surprised to know that the Ritz Carlton welcomes pets for a $125 flat cleaning fee. Whilst meal times such as breakfast can be expensive, you are paying for a quality experience. Speaking for myself I undertook a walk along the Marina and found a café along the waterfront which serves breakfast and may provide those on smaller a budget the chance to taste great American breakfast and lunches at a reduced rate.

The second stop on our tour was the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach. This resort hotel has five hundred and seventeen rooms of various standards with sixteen accessible rooms. Facilities wise there are six food outlets; based on seasonality, two pools, a fitness centre, fantastic spa, Camp Hyatt Kids Club and direct access to the beach via a pedestrian bridge.
At this property we hired bicycles and rode along the promenade which runs along the beach. As I hadn’t ridden a bike for over twenty years it could have been a recipe for disaster but I managed it quite well. You do however have to contend with runners, rollerbladers and other cyclists on a small promenade so be careful! Also you may want to keep an eye out for some rather unusual sights such as, a pigs being walked or the causal dog in sunglasses whilst riding in a basket on a bike. Still on the topic of food, be wary of food portions, I ordered a salad at lunchtime and it would have fed two people! Ask your server how large the meals are before ordering.

Things to do locally: try hiring a Duffy’s electric boat from Newport Beach Pier and do a tour of Newport Harbour. This was a great way to spend a couple of hours, taking in some views of amazing homes and boats. You could follow this up by visiting the Fashion Island Shopping Mall or other outlet shopping areas. Not that it’s hard to miss but Disney is also close by so that may be something to plan for. From the Marina Del Rey, trolley buses run to many of LA’s main sights, these are helpfully colour coded for the different routes and the hotel concierge can assist you.

For Huntington Beach, the beach is the main draw and what a place. Volleyball nets are set up along the full stretch of the white sand in close proximity to various cafes and restaurants. In the evenings bonfires are set up so people can bring along marshmallows, sit down and cook them. What a way to end a day by the beach! My personal favourite hotel was the “Terrenea” because of its location on the coast overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island; it is also only thirty miles south west of downtown Los Angeles.
All in all, this trip has served to open my eyes to a different area of California. If you are doing a fly-drive, all these properties are worth a visit even is only for a few days. The hotels that I inspected were all very diverse in terms of accommodation, facilities and scenery, and if you would like any more information about my favourite hotel; the Terrenea, or any of the hotels mentioned please don’t hesitate to call the office and ask for Karen or the other members of our team.

Edward’s New York FAM trip hosted by Funway Holidays

Funway Holidays New York FAM Trip 31 st March- 4 th April 2014

From the 31 ^st March to April 4 ^th a group of selected agents including myself were hosted by Anna Barnes of Funway Holidays to fly out to New York for a FAM Trip. Departing from Heathrow our journey began by meeting up with Anna and the rest of the group. Anna was a superb host and soon after meeting her and the rest of the group (consisting of nine other women and one male being me!) I was soon made very relaxed and involved.

We left for John F. Kennedy airport at 16:05 and arrived just in time for dinner at around 19:00. Despite a short delay in transfers from JFK to our first hotel, we didn’t let that deter us from trying to learn more about New York and have fun whilst doing so. After the delay we checked wearily into the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel, followed by a slow walk around Times Square. Sadly we were all too tired to fully appreciate all the lights and activity.

Tuesday 1 ^st April

Our first full day in New York can only be described as busy. We started with breakfast in the company of Kerry Kelly the associate director of the Sheraton who proceeded to give us a site inspection. Having spent the previous night in the hotel we already knew that the Sheraton had a central location; being in close proximity to Times Square, a classic style which catered to tourists and corporate business people a like.

Part two of our hectic day continued with a City tour on-board the “Grey Line – Hop on Hop off Downtown Loop Tour”. Despite the cold chill in the air the group began to fully sense and admire the scale of the city, as many pictures were taken! The tour came to a close not before taking in some of the major sights of the city such as the Empire State Building, the Freedom Tower and the various bridges that connect the city to its many boroughs.

Soon after the tour we made way to our next site inspection at the Warwick Hotel. The hotel is in close proximity to the Rockefeller Centre, which is an advantage for those ticking off their list of sites. Out of the hotels we visited on this particular FAM trip this was my preferred hotel as I loved the boutique style of the interior, the history of the building itself and the simple but spacious room types.

After a delicious lunch and inspection of the hotel we moved quickly over to the Wellington Hotel. Whilst the previous hotels offered a comforting space inside the city in which you could relax and escape, the Wellington offered a different experience. Whilst not possessing the room and ambiance of the Warwick or Sheraton, the hotel offered those on a slimmer budget a chance to experience the city in a more central location. This would likely appeal to couples or small groups looking to maximise their time in the city rather than their hotel room.

Our penultimate inspection of the day saw us return to Times Square to view the New Yorker. Towering within the fringes of the square the New Yorker offers a similar experience to the Wellington however the rooms situated towards the top of the hotel; one could be treated to some superb views of the city. Sadly the hotel wasn’t able to hold off or request said rooms, which from a selling point of view is a real shame. The modern room fittings and central location make the New Yorker a suitable step out hotel which supplants you into the heart of the tourist section of New York.

The final hotel of the day was one we all know, the Holiday Inn. Whilst we all know what to expect from the Inn I was still keen to see what the American counterpart of the branch could offer. Despite achieving a lower star ranking then some of the previous hotels, the Inn has access to moderately priced family rooms with interconnecting options. And as agents know too well, interconnecting rooms; or the lack of, is a real issue in cities and a must for most families. So if a young family or group is considering a trip to the Big Apple, think of the Holiday Inn because of its reasonable pricing strategy and room categories.

With the last hotel of the day inspected we were ready to let our hair down on-board the Spirit Dinner Cruise Ship. Circling the city and passing the Statue of Liberty we were promised an evening of sights, food and more importantly a fully stocked bar! After a buffet dinner we were encouraged to stroll across the deck and take in the views of the city landscape and eventually the Statue of Liberty which made locals and tourists alike very emotional. With it being still quite cold we retreated inside and enjoyed some more moderate drinking and dancing.

Wednesday 2 ^nd April

Early starts and late nights were a common feature of this FAM trip. Checking out of the Sheraton first thing we traversed across the city to check into the Westin New York Grand Central. After a quick bag drop we were on the move again as we had a bus to catch to the Woodbury Common Premium Outlets. Still being tired form the night before I was in no real mood to shop so it could be argued that I didn’t appreciate the shopping trip, but the girls were in their element! Setting up a precise route through the outlet the girls literally shopped till they dropped. Amy won the coveted best shopper award with her efforts.

With the shopping done (for me anyway) I took the free time in the afternoon to rest and freshen up for the evening Opera experience. The Opera experience was hosted at the Met where “La Boheme” was performed to an impeccable standard. Being my first Opera I was quite concerned about how things would turn out but I must say I enjoyed it and would recommend it to both Opera lovers and novices. With a relaxed working day but an intense shopping day completed we were ready for our last full day in New York.

Thursday 3 ^rd April

Following our excursions on the previous day the group was up and ready for a morning of site inspections. Our first port of call was the Westin itself. Like the Sheraton the Westin boasted a modern look with holiday and corporate potential. As a guest of the hotel I was most pleased with the coffee making facilities in the room and the luscious beds. Location wise the hotel was situated a reasonable walk away from the tourist hub but a number of food outlets and shops were in close proximity.

Swiftly moving on to our next hotel; the Grand Hyatt, again we were introduced to a hotel which had recently completed redevelopments, bringing the establishment into a contemporary style. The soft furnishings and club room facilities complimented each other nicely. During their renovations a number of rooms were taken out and in their place a number of suites had been given this newly created space. This created a spacious and artistically inspired look.

Next we made a brisk walk towards the NH Jolly Madison Towers, one of the more interesting hotels we inspected. Boasting family friendly rooms and social areas, we found ourselves in a hotel which had a European feel. The staff were exceptionally friendly and great hosts. The rooms weren’t too dissimilar from those we visited on Tuesday but their selling point in my view was the marble bathrooms with deep bath tubs. Madison Towers have taken a European style and applied it to a city space and it works very well.

The final hotel on our grand tour was the Millennium Broadway Hotel which sported a vintage style in its social areas such as the restaurant and bar but was lovingly brought up to speed in its décor in the guest rooms. A point of interest with the Broadway was the old theatre which was still attached to the hotel building. Still in amazing condition; despite being there since the early nineteen hundreds, it is now used for social and corporate events.

And with that our site inspections were finished, but in terms of our FAM we still had much to do! Our tour of the city continued with a guided visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Our guide showed us a scaled down version of the normal tour but it was enjoyable and interesting none the less. We viewed some exquisite pieces of art and history from various time periods.

After a quick lunch, we were on the move again this time taking another tour of the city but with a view to seeing some of New York’s famous movie and television landmarks. Despite the best efforts of the New York traffic to slow us down we made it around the tour, with highlights for our group being the “Dash” store as seen on the Kardashian show and the “Friends” apartment building. Being one of the younger members of the group I was thrilled to have my picture taken outside the Ghostbusters Fire House, which brought much joy to me and my brother when I showed him the photo.

The tour came to a natural close and whilst it was fun to see some of these locations and sites, perhaps it should be saved for those who are true television show fans or movie buffs, I only took an interest in a small selection of the stops mainly those involving comic book films, but I’d recommend it to clients and agents alike.

For our final night in the city our group were treated an evening meal by Funway. After which we prepared ourselves to scale the Empire State Building. This was something I was really looking forward to personally and it didn’t disappoint. With everyone in good spirits we took the elevator to the observation deck and were greeted with stunning views of the city despite the rain. It seemed like a perfect way to end both an enjoyable, educational and tiring FAM trip.

Friday 4 ^th April

Checking out of the Westin early in the morning, we made our way towards the Subway so that we could travel to Brooklyn for a food tour. After meeting our guide: Dave, from Urban Oyster we stopped off at a number of outlets where we were treated to an authentic New York dining experience consisting of a cheese and ham stop, café, bakery and finally a cookie shop. Like the Museum tour we were given a scaled down version of the full tour, but this is something I would highly recommend as something to do. It’s easy to spend your time in the city centre and see familiar stores, restaurants and bars but; if like me, you enjoy seeing authentic stores and restaurants as to compliment the tourist experience then Urban Oysters provide a perfect addition to any holiday. Suitably full and ready to go home we said goodbye to Brooklyn and after one final stop to pick up gifts for home we made our way to JFK and began our journey home.

As we arrived home early Saturday morning, I was tired, keen to see my family and friends but I was also sad about having to say goodbye to everyone. I felt that I had met some lovely people on this FAM trip and made some friends in the process. I wouldn’t have enjoyed myself so much if it wasn’t for the pleasantness of the group. Despite being the only chap amongst a FAM dominated by women, I felt very welcomed, involved and not an outsider. So I would like to thank the girls for making my trip, and I hope I made it enjoyable for them with my “witty” puns. Finally I would like to thank Anna and Funway for giving me this opportunity and I can highly recommend them.

Bermuda – An Island Paradise

I have just returned from an educational visit to the beautiful island of Bermuda, courtesy of British Airways & the Bermuda Tourism Authority.

Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory in the North Atlantic Ocean it is reached in just over 7 hours from Gatwick with daily direct flights. The currency is the Bermuda Dollar & is based on the US Dollar.

The colours of Bermuda are sensational from the stunning blue sea, the unique pink fine sandy beaches, the delightful flowers and hedgerows.

The Bermudians are the friendliest hosts and love to have a chat with you. They are very proud of their island heritage & enjoy informing you of their history, what to do & where to go.

Bermuda is sold as a destination all year round and the weather could be good in our winter months but I would recommend travelling between April and November when you can be assured of the sunshine & warmth of the seas. Car hire is not permitted on the island & there is a speed limit of 20 mph. It is easy to explore by taxi, bus, ferry or scooter. The list of things to do in Bermuda is endless, much more than I ever imagined, golf, watersports, museums, diving, fishing, bird watching & of course rum tasting.

We were treated like royalty at the Fairmont Mayakoba, where we stayed for 2 nights. This hotel is situated on the Riviera Maya, 10 minutes from Playa del Carmen. This hotel is unique in that it is built around mangroves, the beach, and a golf course, the resort is perfect for all ages and with the legendary Fairmont standard you have it all. The resort had 5 swimming pools, 3 restaurants, children’s club and a fab spa. If you want a bit of Mexican authenticity you won’t go far wrong with Dreams situated in Tulum. Just a few minutes drive from the Tulum ruins- which is a must see!

Jackie’s Classic Collection Trip to Venice

Little did I know that when I checked in at Gatwick I was about to take part in the most enjoyable Educational I have had in a while! Although this was the busiest couple of days ever. Venice is just the most magical city with its sounds, smells, the food and of course the atmosphere. Just to walk from hotel to hotel, over the bridges, ambling through the quaint little alleys where you will find an Aladdin’s Cave of tiny shops, you will find an array of Venice Glass and Deli’s filled with mouth watering delights. Authentic Venetian Masks, and pastas of every variety. With the gorgeous aromas of coffees and pastries coming from the tiny little cafe’s that entice you to stop and part with your hard earned money.

After a late arrival (we had been diverted to Bologna) (Don’t Ask!), we arrived at The Metropole Hotel by private water Taxi. This hotel immediately exudes a warm cosy atmosphere. The foyer had many baskets filled with Cinnamon, Star Anise and Cloves, expelling a strong Christmas fragrance, which added to the cosiness already being experienced, this hotel is one of the first you will reach when you leave the Lagoon to enter the Grand Canal, It was one of my favourites, and is at the beginning of the Grand Canal where you can walk to St Marks Square within minutes. Also, being on the Grand Canal you can make use of the very convenient Vaporettors, (Water Buses). Our Guide did give us a good tip: to Travel on the Vaporettor its entire route as this gives you an idea of where things are. Also a great opportunity to take photos. But back to the Metropole, the food is fabulous and I loved the small intimate dining room. With 67 rooms, it is quite small but the hotel rooms are fairly large and extremely comfortable, all are furnished in deep rich colours adding to the Venetian feel. All the Staff are very approachable and very helpful. The bar is very relaxing. Also there is a very opulent lounge where tea and cakes can be served, if required.

Onward to the Locanda Vivaldi Hotel, this hotel was all about the view, if you can request the room that overlooks the Basin of St Mark you will have space and a great view. This quaint little hotel only has 27 rooms but it has a lot of Venetian Character. It boasts a restaurant that provides an array of Venetian Cuisine .But I must admit the Decor in the restaurant was not to my taste, but location of the hotel was good: and I loved the Panoramic Terrace, I think if I had viewed this property in the Summer I would have had a different opinion. The manager was lovely, He makes a great Cocktail. He loved to point out all the various pieces of Murano glass and their value . Every room is different in this hotel !. So make sure to request one with a view.

Next Hotel Luna Baglioni one of the Oldest Hotels in Venice which dates back to the 12 ^th Century: But this hotel has a really lovely feel to it, rich silk wall coverings in the rooms, Location is central and near to everything. This hotel actually has the most impressive Frescoed walls in the breakfast room, which was originally The Ballroom. We had a great dinner here in the Canova Restaurant. The hotel Is beautiful and is all about food and comfort, therefore, the hotel does not provide facilities such as Spas and activities, but with Venice outside your door, who wants to spend the day inside the hotel: Luna Baglioni has a total of 104 Rooms and Suites.

Next Day we ventured beyond the Rialto Bridge to the Palazzo Giovannelli Hotel, which is located right next to a Vaporetto stop. So you can really get about as It is a busy area. The hotel has a more modern feel to it, although the ceilings still feature classic Venetian architecture. I quite liked this hotel.

Hotel Al Reali, on viewing this property, It immediately springs to mind that this would be ideal for clients wanting a touch of Luxury. This hotel is very small and only has 31 rooms, but it is a small Luxury Hotel of the world and provides a bevvy of goodies such as indoor pool, treatment room, sauna, steam room and Spa. All in all out of the hotels we viewed this one provided the Spas that are lacking in Venice. It seemed a good idea to sightsee, come back and have a massage.

Next Stop the Westin Europa & Regina, we had lunch at this Hotel and loved it. With beautiful areas for outside dining, and a very nice location near the artistic & Theatre Districts this would suit the keen shopper. Where the building had once been 5 Palaces in its’ Original form, the hotel that now stands, is divided into different areas, but is very good for the Boutiques and shopping area. There are a total of 185 Bedrooms and Suites spread around the 5 palace areas of the hotel.

The Gritti Palace : this is one of my favourite hotels, which has a cooking school for all you culinary wizards. The hotel has not long been open after a total refurbishment where the whole building has been stripped back and then lovingly restored to a very high standard. I loved the upmarket cosy atmosphere that this hotel offers. I would definitely return to this hotel in a heartbeat. The hotel has 82 Bedrooms and suites.

On to the Palazzo Stern: This Hotel I found unique in its design of the communal areas It had a partly Monastic feel to it. It would suit those clients who like history and museums and also those who do not mind walking as it has quite a lot of steps. It has 24 rooms so is one of the smaller properties. It was not one of my favourites.

Ca’Sagredo: Another peculiar hotel that would not suit all. It seems to have the feel of a Museum in parts, and the rooms felt a bit spooky. We had dinner at this hotel which had an outstanding Menu the wines were also very impressive: This hotel has 41 Bedrooms and is very Historic in feel.

Hotel Danieli. I Loved this hotel! Very classic with rich furnishing that really plunges you back in time, As the manager walked us round this hotel, the information that was given regarding its history made you love the property even more. The restaurant on the roof (La Terrazza) has stunning panoramic views of the Gran Canal. It is worth visiting this hotel to see the foyer, as it takes your breath away, and It transports you to a different space and time. The Danieli has 215 bedrooms, each room seems to be different but all are light and airy. The whole group had a great dinner here which was made more special by the staff and waiters who are really great and made us very welcome, I felt I could drop a carrot on the tablecloth without causing shock and horror …

Last stop the Centurion Hotel, this hotel is such a shock to your senses, you enter a very impressive building expecting more of the same but the inside is a complete shock with its rooms in such colours as Lime Greens and Terracotta Red. It is so upbeat and modern on the inside, but so Gothic and Venetian on the outside. The small touches they have included like the aromatic essences and decorations which all add to a very pleasing experience.This hotel has 50 spacious rooms, but the public areas seemed to have suffered because of this. The Breakfast room seemed quite small.

After a whirlwind tour of Venice courtesy of Classic Collection. I must admit, Venice now is a must to go back to, I thought it was such a special Magical place, and totally a place you have to do once in your life: I must Thank Classic Collection for a very successful Introduction to Venice: I can honestly say I enjoyed every minute of it.

Before I write any more I must first try and suggest that you should fly British Airways direct when travelling to this destination. Our group, unfortunately did not have this luxury, and spent hours in Miami Airport. Despite this we still had a cheerful and upbeat group who arrived into Nassau late afternoon on Sunday. When we finally arrived into Sandals Royal Bahamian o ur first activity consisted of sampling a course in the Japanese Teppanyaki Restaurant, w here we were treated to an entertaining singing chef (Wannabe Elton John). Apparently Daniel was leaving that night on the plane. We did not discover who Daniel was, b ut he left anyway: We had a great night, terrific service and good food. Being a dedicated Agent, I visited a ll bar areas to test facilities and products. It was lovely walking around the resort with the little s tage areas which had live bands playing; Karaoke was also attempted in one of The Royal Bahamians Bars; this was short lived and not very successful, by this time the Sun had risen so we all decided to attempt to find our rooms and get a little shut eye, as we had a full Itinerary p lanned for the next day.

Day Two : Started with breakfast by the pool which was, catered by the lovely staff. One noticeable feature about Royal Bahamian is that it has a beach on an Offshore Island. Hence the picture of Ricardo, he puts you on a l ittle motor boat and takes you across to the little Island which is quiet and has a lovely beach and a great Restaurant called The Grill. Here you can relax for the whole day if you want to, and then simply hop on a boat back later during the day. Poor Ricardo travels back and forth every few hours. After spending a few hours swimming and exploring the little Island we travelled back to the main Island and visited the main pool which has a swim up bar with such a great collection of Staff all f riendly, and very helpful.

After being caught enjoying ourselves far too much, a site tour and training seminar was arranged. The Red Lane Spa was superb, despite being relatively small in comparison to the rest of the site. After viewing different parts of the resort I gathered that it was quite large and commercial: But I loved the Balmoral Tower where my room was: I had a partial view of the Sea. But you do have to request Balconies and views: Windsor section was being refurbished and to be quite honest it did need it. It does pay to try to get a room with a view, as the resort has rooms that face inward with gardens and they are quite shaded. All rooms are very spacious and very l uxurious, light and airy. Also at the Resort you can play Tennis , take part in Water Sports Scuba Dive make use of the six Swimming Pools, ten Restaurants and most importantly eight bars! If you like a resort that is not isolated where you can get to take excursions to commercial areas and you love a resort that has no children then this is the resort for you.

Day Three Onwards to Exuma : Boarded a small aircraft to Exuma which provided a beautiful view from above. When we landed into Exuma we had a free for all getting our luggage off the tarmac which sounds a nightmare but actually was great fun, thanks to the very friendly Sandals Staff that are there ready and waiting at the Airport. While waiting at the Airport for Sandals to organise our luggage, we spoke to the locals, who proved to be de eply proud of their little Islands and they can tell you all about its history and our British history as well. To say I enjoyed this little Island is an understatement. From the wonderful ambience to the powder white sands of its beaches it is the Jewel in the Crown of Sandals resorts. The layout of the grounds with the t op class Greg Norman Golf Course , Cafe Paris Red Lane Spa Water Sports and Tennis Courts and its quiet pool areas. The rooms are a ll generous in size and luxurious. The beach is truly magnificent and a sight to behold, if you can afford to upgrade to beach front, at this resort it would be worth it. After our group had the site inspection we had the best day on the Golf Course, we put a new meaning to a drive… Up and down the bunkers and the green in our buggies. After which we changed and headed for the Beach Bar, with loungers in the pool, Swim up pools and many other activities where we watched Pool Volleyball and Water aerobics, all taken on in the name of Classic Travel.

Onwards to the Excursions on Day four after Several visits to Cafe de Paris,(my room was opposite) and testing the facilities of resort, we attempted a Goldeneye excursion, which is such a good day out, in the James Bond Speedboat. We ventured out to some of the most spectacular Islands the Bahamas has to offer, From Geysers to some spectacular v iewpoints, we did it all. Ending up with the best excursion of all. Swimming with pigs: Yes real hairy oink oink pigs! And yes they really do swim, be careful if you try this as they are quite partial to nibbling a T-shirt or two.

Kombo Beach 3.5 grade Kotu
This was my home whilst in The Gambia and is a great mid-range hotel with a fabulous beachfront location. It’s a lively hotel with activities and entertainment throughout the day and evening. The rooms are fairly basic but there are plenty of room upgrades available. Kombo has a great atmosphere and by the end of my trip I had grown to love it.

Senegambia 3.5 grade Kololi
If you want a mid-range hotel with lots of bars and restaurants on your doorstep then this is your place. It is situated on the beach as well as having an impressive beachside pool and bar in addition to a second swimming pool. It is the largest and one of the best-known hotels in The Gambia.

Mandina Lodges Unique – Makasutu Forest

I was blown away by these lodges and the surrounding area, it is truly stunning. These striking riverside lodges offer an unforgettable experience in the wilderness with the chance to discover the people and wildlife of The Gambia that have made the forest their home. Grenada November 2013

During November 2013 I was invited on a Grenada board of tourism educational trip to Grenada and I was more than happy to accept their invitation. Grenada is perhaps one of the lesser known islands of the Caribbean but that doesn't mean it lacks any of the natural beauty, elegant hotels and sandy beaches that the region is famous for.

Setting off from Gatwick airport and after a short stop at St Lucia we arrived in Grenada on glorious sunny afternoon. We were greeted by our very friendly and loquacious bus driver Roger who kept us entertained during some of the longer bus journeys whilst on the trip. For the first two nights of the weeklong visit we stayed in the Coyaba Beach Resort which is situated opposite and a shopping centre and a ten minute drive from St George's, the islands capital. The hotel has more than adequate facilities including two bars, a swimming pool, conference suite and of course a beach. The three star resort is more suitable for an older couple who want to stay in a compact resort that is easy to navigate and not too extravagant. However the second hotel we stayed in, the Calabash, blends luxury, originality and simplicity very well. The Calabash's suites were spacious and fitted to perfection whilst the option of being able to eat breakfast on your balcony is a very nice touch (although it is also available in the restaurant). Soaking in the morning sun and listening to the sweeping sea waves whilst eating a perfectly poached egg is not a bad start to the day. I would recommend the lobster for dinner too!

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the British run Calabash Resort but the next hotel we stayed in also packed a powerful punch. Mount Cinnamon, located on a hill, overlooking the St George's is in blissful location although the walk up hill to your villa could be a struggle for some (lifts are available from reception if you ask). Most villas are two stories high complete with two en-suite bedrooms, relatively large kitchen, living room and balcony facing the sea.

Whilst staying at the Mount Cinnamon resort we embarked on an island tour visiting numerous interesting places. We stopped off at the bustling St George’s market were we sampled the local spices and street culture. We dined at BB’s famous restaurant by the sea where I had my first taste of barracuda and took in the city from the fort. On route to the fort you have walk through the police stations grounds where President Maurice Bishop was executed during the revolution in 1983. We also went to the very informative cricket museum which details how to the sport was adopted as Grenada’s national sport by the slaves so is worth a visit even if you are not a cricket fan. Whilst perhaps the highlight of the trip was having a guided tour around the River Antoine Rum distillery where free samples were given!

We spent our last two nights of the tour in the famous Spice Island Beach resort which is owned by Sir Royston Hopkin and laid out along the quieter, southern end of Grand Anse Beach, Grenada's best beach. The hotel’s service was impeccable; Sir Royston and his family run the hotel flawlessly with well-trained staff whom address you by your surname soon after you've arrived. The 64 rooms are all suites. I stayed in one of the Seagrape Beach Suites, which are lavishly furnished with en-suite luxurious large whirlpool tubs with views of the ocean. Whilst on the terrace there are private hammocks and sun loungers awaiting on the sand facing the sea. Whilst the Royal Collection Pool suites give you your own hot tub and pool but you miss out on the sea views. The buffet breakfasts are excellent, and feature lots of Grenadian things to try, such as nutmeg-flavoured muffins and soursop juice. Whilst the dinners in Oliver’s restaurant are five course very grand affairs.

Grenada is beautiful Tropical Island with a lush green interior, friendly people, good resorts and seemingly endless sunshine and beaches. If you are looking for holiday with guaranteed sun, good food and weather then the ‘spice island’ provides you with an interesting option for a breakaway.

My first “Fam” trip began with an early start leaving home at four in the morning. With a rendezvous time of six o’clock at Gatwick I was excited and nervous; excited to be travelling and exploring somewhere new but also nervous as this was my first work based excursion and I was travelling by myself. Upon meeting Daniele of Typically Italian, John and the other agents I quickly felt at ease and soon knew that we were in for an enjoyable and informative weekend.

After a short flight; already feeling exhausted, we were greeted at Bologna Airport by the enthusiastic chef of Al Vecchio Convento, Massimo, who gave us a warm welcome and a quick history lesson of the local area providing some background to the Emilia Romagna region.
On our way to the hotel we had a surprise change of plan and journeyed to Drei Dona – a local vineyard. The tiredness the group and I experienced during the morning suddenly lifted as we indulged in a tour of the complex which was complimented with a light lunch and of course some delectable wine. I’m not a wine drinker myself but I can honestly say that the few glasses I had at Drei Dona was the best wine I have ever tasted. It must have had something special about it as the group finally broke out into smiles and laughter after a long morning! After improving our spirits we left the garden; not before purchasing a bottle or two to bring back home, we carried onto Al Vecchio Convento which can be found in the town of Portico di Romana.
Upon arriving I was struck by the remoteness of the region. Situated among rolling hills and existing alongside a waterfall, Portico di Romana, comes across as an authentic Italian town with a quiet existence punctured by visiting tourists which brings out the best in local hospitality.
Within moments of walking into Al Vecchio Convento we were treated to a “Snack” which soon became a multiple course lunch, assisting us in dealing with all the wine we drank previously! After completing lunch we were taken on a tour of the town; which has a population little over four-hundred, we took in the local landmarks such as the bell tower and the Ponte “Della Maesta” bridge.
Following the tour we returned to our rooms for a much needed rest. Rounding off the day we dined at the hotel restaurant where we were served a truffle inspired meal. Despite the hotel being marked as three stars – the food was certainly not that. The numerous meals we had there; without exaggeration, wouldn't look out of place in five star restaurants. Each meal was prepared by experienced chefs with locally produced ingredients. With a long day coming to an end we retired to our separate rooms in preparation for a busy Saturday.

Saturday

After a brief lie-in breakfast was called for, serving up Italian style bread, fruit and cakes. Soon after our group – a strong fifteen, were called into the kitchen for a cooking lesson. The lesson began with a demonstration of how to prepare; from scratch, bread and pasta. Already thinking about lunch the group enthusiastically threw themselves into the task and produced ravioli, tagliatelle, loaves of bread and pizza bases. The class was led by Massimo – head chef and his attentive staff who, despite the language barrier helped us along and maximised the experience for us all.
Proving ourselves in the kitchen our efforts were rewarded with our various pasta’s and bread’s being enjoyed at lunch time. Sadly after being photographed cooking, my Mum now has proof that I can cook and has demanded that I do so at home now! With the morning activities being enjoyed we were informed that the afternoon would be spent walking off our lunch with a Truffle hunt across the hills of the region.
Gearing ourselves up in water-proofs and boots we trekked across the stunning landscape which was only slightly hidden by the winter mist. Being led by expert truffle hunters and their working dogs Rex and Otto, our group experienced at firsthand the time and patience needed to collect truffles. According to our guides on average a truffle dog takes four years to train, meaning many long walks and wrestling with the dogs to stop them eating the truffles first! If you’re thinking of spending time at Al Vecchio Convento both indulging in truffles and joining the expeditions is a must, both for learning more about truffles and experiencing a glimpse of real Italian landscape. Our walk proved fruitful as we found both white and black truffles, which were made use of, that same day in our evening meal. En route back the hotel we stopped off at “Il Vulcano” which despite the name isn't an actual volcano. Without underselling the site; it’s still a marvellous stop off point. Sitting atop of one of the many hills in the surrounding area, beneath the earth gas storage rests which has escaped through a division in the earth. Over time and because of an unknown incident a flame arises, which has been recorded to be ablaze since the twelfth century. In the summer time, groups are offered the chance to have a picnic on top of the hill. Whilst we weren't there to experience it, one would say that at the right time it would be quite the spectacle and worth considering if you visit.
Finishing off our stay, the group was spoiled with an evening drink and meal; which we all had too much off, resulting in much merriment and did nothing but spur us into dancing the night away when the local band made an appearance.

Sunday was an early start as we made the trip home back to Gatwick. All the while I was thinking that despite being to Italy before I had over the course of a couple of nights had learnt and experienced more of the real Italy then in some of the more well known places associated with Italy which I've been to.
Typically Italian has tapped into a popular market but have excelled themselves with providing tours and excursions which bring forth true authentic Italian experiences which one may miss out on. A summertime visit to this region would be advised as to enjoy the better temperatures allowing you to dine outside. It can also be advised that spending a week at Al Vecchio Convento may prove to be slower for those more acclimatised to busy holidays but as a weekend excursion or a close to a wider Italian experience; a couple of nights at Al Vecchio Convento would prove to be an excellent compliment to any holiday.
On a personal note, if all FAM trips are like this one with, good company, lovely country and exquisite food, I think I’ll get on with the travel industry quite nicely. Pauline’s latest Adventure.

Pauline, one of our Senior Travel Consultants, recently visited the Caribbean Island of Saint Lucia.

I had a great week holidaying in the beautiful island of Saint Lucia. I stayed in the opulent 4 star St James Club in the Morgan Bay resort with suites overlooking the ocean on the hillside. Although the sunsets and sun rises were splendid climbing up those steep steps after a few evening cocktails was a challenge!

During the week we visited the islands rainforest where we bird watched and zip wired through the trees. This was an exhilarating experience but not for the faint hearted as the drops can be high. I took another step on the wild side by sea trekking, an activity offered at the hotel’s grounds. After a briefing by the tour leader and putting on the appropriate gear, including a helmet and lycra swim suit, we set off to the bottom of the ocean (as far down as 20 feet). We saw a plethora of fish and other under water life, including a tiny sea horse, which concluded a very relaxing stress free week.

Kerala Fam Trip September 2013 with If Only

Classic Travel loves a fam trip. Every week we seem to be a staff member short as one of our agents has gallivanted off to some far flung paradise. Our agents love being part of such trips not just for a bit more sun but because they are a very important sales tool and increase our knowledge of popular locations more than any guide book ever can. We feel it is vital that our agents go on one or two excursions per year for their and our benefit.

I was very fortunate to be invited on If Only's inaugural fam trip to Kerala or 'God's own country' as it is affectionately known. Despite Kochi, the state's second city and our first port of call, undergoing the construction of a new metro it didn't take long to work out why the state has received such praise. Everywhere you turn there seems to be a Hindu Temple, Mosque or Church and seemingly little religious tension among residents. Whilst beyond the cities the state's prolific monsoon season has created a lush green landscape filled with unruly forests and incredible diversity in its flora, fauna and wildlife.

With Kerala being one of the most prosperous Indian states and described as "India Light" by our exceptional tour guide Sinnah, culture shock was not an issue within the group. However there was little time to adjust to our new surroundings as we arrived at the beginning of the Onam festival celebrations, the harvest festival of Kerala. Our first hotel, the Brunton Boatyard, in Fort Kochi had numerous and beautiful floral designs called Pookalam's in the lobby and after admiring the intricate patterns of these we were ushered in the hotel's restaurant for a traditional festival lunch, a Sadya. A Sadya is served on plantain leaves and can have more than fifteen curries, and in keeping with tradition we ate with our hands. I think I make less mess on the table with chopsticks!

On our first full day in India we were given a tour of Fort Kochi and saw the famous Chinese fishing nets in action. We even tried our hand in lifting the nets with our most notable catch being an inedible Jelly-Fish. We were given a taste of the countries vibrant street life and Cochin's interesting colonial past taking in the Jew Town and St Francis' Church where Vasco de Gama was buried until being laid to rest finally in Belem, Portugal.

After two nights in the states second city we set off early (well early for Travel Agents) to journey south to Periyar Tiger Reserve where we stayed in the excellent Spice Garden Resort. Along the way we stopped off at a fascinating tea plantation to see the complex process of tea making first-hand. Upon arriving at our resort we were given a cooking class and a protein rich dinner to prepare us for our jungle trek commencing at seven the following morning.

Perhaps our fifth day in Kerala was the most memorable for me. During the jungle trek we spotted Lion-tailed macaques, Great Hornbills, various squirrels, a scorpion and many leeches. Typically, a leech infiltrated my extra leggings and drew some blood whilst I had a near miss with the Scorpion after jumping over it to get a better angle for a photo. The afternoon provided even more excitement as we travelled by boat across a man-made waterway to the Lake Palace Hotel. By our boat's jetty we saw a Rat Snake whilst during the journey we saw deer, Kingfisher, a lizard and a wild boar from the hotel's ground. To finish an already eventful day we visited an elephant camp where we rode, fed and washed them whilst a few brave members of the group (not me) were washed themselves by an elephant. I think I will stick to showers.

After an eventful stay in the jungle we departed for the Coconut Lagoon resort in Kumarakom by the coast and famous backwaters. The hotel is only accessible by boat and during the short journey we passed many rice boats and fruit bats. Upon reaching the luxurious hotel we relaxed by the pool before being entrusted with vegetable chopping and peeling duties in the kitchen in preparation for Onam celebrations the following day. Needless to say we impressed the locals with our cookery skills!

To celebrate the festival most of the group woke early to make an 'If Only' themed Pookalam, much to Neil's delight. Whilst for lunch we enjoyed another Sadya with the ladies dressed in sahri's and men in mundu loin cloth (not skirts). In the evening we were treated to an exquisite seafood dinner in the resort’s specialist sea food restaurant.

In the morning we set off on the bumpy road for the Marari Beach resort in Mararikulam for the last leg of our South India adventure, by the beach. On the way we were lucky enough to enjoy a rice boat tour that showed us the extraordinary backwaters. Sailing down the narrow canals we saw people bathing and washing their clothes in the water and gained an insight to life in the 'Venice of the East'.

After visiting some impressive nearby resorts including a Beach Symphony we arrived at the Marari Beach hotel where we posed for photos in its verdant surroundings at sunset and enjoyed our last taste of Indian cuisine, a butterfly sanctuary and strolls on the thick sandy beach. A fitting ending to a very memorable trip.

Classic Travel Open Day – 10th September

Classic Travel of Loughton welcomed its loyal customers and special guests MP Eleanor Laing and Cllr. Jill Angold-Stephens on Tuesday the 10 ^th of September for the grand opening of our new premises. After thirty wonderful years at our previous location we have recently moved into plush new surroundings and wanted to celebrate this momentous occasion.

On an exciting afternoon MP Eleanor Laing officially cut the ribbon thus declaring our new premises open. To help us celebrate, our clients and friends were treated to the sounds of the Caribbean with a steel band whilst enjoying canapés and champagne afternoon tea.
In addition to the entertainment of the band we welcomed a selection of tour operators & tourist board members to join us on our big day, giving our clients an exclusive chance to meet and greet those who make holidays happen.
With all this going on we also held various raffles and prize draws including a grand prize. The winner of this prize; whose name was drawn out of a hat, won two nights hotel accommodation in Italy, which was kindly provided by Kuoni.

Simon’s Trip to Lanzarote

In early July I spent four days in the Spanish Island of Lanzarote . The trip was arranged by British Airways and the Spanish tourist board to celebrate and introduce BA’s inaugural direct flights to the island. My group and I were fortunate enough to be seated club class on both journeys and the luxuries that go with it. We were treated to a champagne breakfast in British Airway’s exclusive lounge at Gatwick Airport after skipping the queues at baggage check in. Both flights served more than adequate food, perhaps the best food I have ever had on an aircraft, and we were given more space than those in the economy classes. Sipping a glass of champagne and looking out of the window during the flight I said to myself ‘don’t get used to this!’

Despite Lanazarote being a mere 125 km off the coast of Morocco it has a pleasant dry climate. The temperature rarely exceeds 30 degrees but has plenty of sunshine for you sun worshipers. Our hotel Los Jameos Playa is situated only a ten minute drive from the Arrecife airport which is of course very convenient after a four hour flight. The four star hotel is in a prime location being by a long stretch of glorious beach, numerous bars and shops selling all you need for your break-away. However the family hotel also has plenty to keep you entertained. I tried my hand at mini golf, received tennis lessons and swam in some of the hotel’s swimming pools. The Los Jameos Playa seems to cater for families and couples alike with a decent array of activities in and out of its grounds (there are diving and sailing excursions available) while the buffet styled breakfast, lunch and dinner provides a sufficient choice of food. Although queuing time for steaks during dinner could sometimes exceed ten -minutes.

Lanzarote has many points of interest. The islands buildings are not permitted to be over two stories high which gives it some distinctiveness. We visited the stunningly barren Timanfaya National Park with its high volcanic tips, geysers and arid surroundings it is a very unique place and perhaps the island star attraction. We also guzzled on wine at various vineyards and had a meal in the epic setting in The Cave of Los Verdes. Arrecife, the capital, also has art galleries, fine dining and a vibrant night-life.

Lanazarote combines natural beauty, gorgeous weather and versatile hotels that cater for tourists of all needs. I would recommend a trip for any wishing for a relaxing time in the sun.

It features 104 newly renovated and contemporary guest rooms on a prime 750-foot stretch of serene beach giving it a very unique setting. It caters for couples, families and weddings without sacrificing quality. I took a dip in all of three on-site pools and even had a massage. I left the motorised water sports such as Jet skiing to more adventurous members of the group. If you choose the Tamarind your children can join the Flying Fish Kids Club or the Club Tamarind teen lounge. I would recommend the Tamarind without any hesitation to most clients as it would suit a variety of people’s needs. Attached to the Tamarind and part of the Elegant Hotels group lays the House resort. The House, like the Tamarind holds a Trip Advisor certificate of Excellence, but is an adult only hotel. The House is a chic, tranquil retreat for adults to unwind and reconnect in a setting of understated elegance. We pampered ourselves with a complimentary jet lag revival massage in a beach cabana before enjoying complimentary afternoon tea and evening canapés. In the evening we dined in the famous Daphne's Restaurant . Visitors can even feast on a complimentary Champagne breakfast (I did) and then explore the beauty of Barbados. I took advantage of the water taxi ride offer which took me on a trip up the awe-inspiring coast. There are on site activities such as biking tours, deep sea fishing and even helicopter rides which I was not brave enough to do! If you require that extra bit of private space and exclusivity then the House is for you. Perhaps the Grandparents can stay in the House and the rest of the family in the Tamarind!

Another stand out resort was the Southern Palms Beach Club. It has colonial style buildings and manicured gardens. It is perfectly located for the shops and restaurants of the nearby town of Oistins and is also close to an active turtle breeding ground. I was extremely lucky to swim with some on their way from the beach. T he Crane, which is located on the south coast and is the oldest hotel on the island, was another stand out destination. It has been awarded many accolades including being in the BBC’s Top 50 Places to Go Before You Die. Y ou have the most amazing views on the rooftop terrace looking down onto the beach, and if you prefer more of a village feel, then I would suggest The Crane. To finish our trip we went on a catamaran cruise (which are available on most popular beaches) before sunset. We swam and had great food and drink (perhaps too much drink!).

With the sound of the gentle waves and perfect weather I wondered to myself when sunbathing on the deck on the boat ‘if there are more educational trips coming up.'

Large stand alone complex about 75 minutes drive from Antalya Airport. Nearest town is Belek which costs about 6 Euros by taxi each way.

The beach here was coarse sand dark in colour, all private to Club Med Plenty of good sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach, towels and showers provided on the beach. Water sports available. Banana boat was a separate charge. Life guard on duty at beach & swimming pools!
Stunning swimming pool area, pool for everyone and a large pool for children. There was at the side of the resort a water slide park & sunbathing area, great fun ! The beach bar was open from morning until night, with lovely comfy chairs and sun beds, food was served here all day long. This was a lovely area and was popular with guests.

The main hotel has rooms spread across, from right to left, there are at least 12 categories of rooms just for Club rooms ! Some rooms have bath & shower, some have shower only and some have views of either the gardens, golf course, swimming pool and for a supplement sea views.
Some rooms are close to restaurant & bars but there was no noise I was advised by guests.
There is a wide selection of family rooms, some sleep up to 3, some family rooms are deluxe that are on 2 levels, which consist of a lounge, hamman and a veranda that have access to a private swimming pool. (Not ll deluxe rooms have access to a swimming pool).

Club Med Belek also has private villas, which have 3 bedrooms, but only advertise as 2 bedooms. There are 3 different types of villas, depending on the view – sea view, garden and courtyard. These villas are on two levels, the 2 bedrooms are upstairs, a double and a twin bedroom (the twin can be changed to a double) The villas have a sauna, 2 balconies with 2 bathrooms, also a separate shower room. Each villa has a personal Butler. Guests can have their breakfast in their villa, there is a BBQ in each garden . If guests don’t wish to leave the villa for meals the golf restaurant will provide room service for the guests. The private swimming pool of each villa swings around the villa and each has a large garden. Each villa has an indoor pool.

One large restaurant with outside seating & there was one section just for adult dining. A Japanese restaurant was shortly opening.

All 3 childrens clubs are here ; staff were great fun and very caring towards their children.

There are 10 tennis courts, archery, football and a golf driving range. Trapeze school and trampolining. The spa is beautiful and the rates very good. There is a good selection of shops along the broadwalk of the hotel.

Fantastic for families, couples and adults of all ages. The Club Med G.O’s spoke English and the Turkish staff in the bars and restaurants were very friendly and efficient.

All in all a great addition to the Club Med portfolio .

Stunning Mykonos & Santorini

MYKONOS & SANTORINI

I have just returned from an educational visit to Greece courtesy of Amathus Holidays. We flew into the most cosmopolitan of the Greek islands, Mykonos. Mykonos Town is truly beautiful, such a pretty place with cobbled streets, pristine clean ,great shopping & waterfront bars and restaurants.

I visited a number of hotels on the island –

After 2 nights stay we travelled on the Catamaran ferry to Santorini, the journey took just over 2 hours, it was interesting to see the other Cyclades Islands in the distance. For a 2 centre holiday these 2 islands will work really well together.

Santorini is so different from Mykonos; once a volcanic island which left the island with fantastic cliffs and stunning scenery, it is truly a place of beauty. I stayed at Mystique in Oia, on the north tip of the island Oia is famous for its sunsets. This hotel is situated on the edge of a cliff with spectacular views, but not for the faint hearted!

Fira, is the town where all the cruise ships anchor, a busy capital with fine shops, restaurants, traffic free, so super to stroll through the maze of winding streets and admire the spectacular views of the caldera.

I have just returned from Club Med’s new resort in Italy, Pragelato Vialattea . I was privileged to be one of the first people to experience this unique ski resort.

Pragelato is situated at the foot of the Europe’s second largest ski area and the skiing was great for all ages and abilities. The snow was lovely & fresh and plenty of it !

The resort is a 4 trident standard set out in a village style where you can ski from the door. Pragelato boasts a swimming pool, spa and sauna with children’s clubs from the age of 2.

Sandals

I was lucky enough to be invited to Beaches Turks and Caicos, and even though it was only for three days I was determined to see as much of the village as possible.

The Caribbean Village is nearer the beach and again the standard rooms can sleep a family of four and the suites can cater for up to 8 people. Finally the Italian Village is the newest area and is the closest to the beach. The rooms there can cater for families of 4 up to families of 12; ideal for Grandparents, Parents and Grandchildren.

Bobby Dee’s is an 50’s style diner that served Pizza’s, Burgers, Shakes, ice creams and Sodas. The service was quick and the food piping hot and tasty. This diner is aimed at the teenage and child markets as it is near one of the children’s pools. All the food and drink is included in the cost unless otherwise stated.

I did attempt to visit all of the 16 dining locations but only managed 8 of them. My favourite was ‘Kimonos’ a Japanese restaurant that has to be seen to be believed. The chefs prepare and cook the food at your table whilst singing and dancing. You have to make a reservation for Kimonos but it is well worth it. For those with a sweet tooth Cafe De Paris is for you, a French Patisserie with many tasty treats and a variety of coffees.
For the children you have kids clubs for all ages from the fully staffed crèche for 0-11 months to the Xbox lounge for the older children and teenagers, every age is covered.
The Red Lane Spa comes at a supplement but is excellent value for the peace and relaxation of the massage and steam rooms.

For a trip away from the property try the Kitty Katt cruise which leaves the beach and is a party cruise for all the family. Drinks, Music and food are supplied but again this is at an extra cost and not included in the all inclusive option. This cruise takes you out and allows you to snorkel, swim and zip down the waterslide. This was a good day out and again well worth the cost.

Overall I would recommend this property to everyone. There is so much to keep everybody occupied no one will be bored or overlooked.

Mauritius 2012

In October I was lucky enough to travel to the Indian Ocean paradise of Mauritius with Kuoni & Sun International Resorts.

After an overnight flight and a welcome with frangipane necklaces we transferred to the Sugar Beach Hotel on the West coast.

The hotel is well spaced with rooms in the manor house and in villas around the well maintained grounds. From my beachfront room the sunset was great.

There are 3 restaurants to choose from each offering something different. The 2 swimming pools overlook the beach.

A walk through the gardens brings you to La Pirogue, which has a traditional Mauritian style and feel. All rooms are in thatched bungalows.

Guests can use all of the facilities at each hotel, which also expands your dining options.
Our second day was spent dolphin watching on board a catamaran, the b-b-q lunch was delicious.

The next day we left the beach and visited the capital Port Louis. Quite a contrast to the beach resorts. Here we took part in a treasure hunt, with the assistance of the friendly local people we met on our exploration of the town.

Next stop on the east coast was the newly opened Ambre, this hotel certainly has a wow factor as you enter the vast reception. The rooms are decorated in a modern style and there is a choice of restaurants.

Our final stop of the day was at Long Beach. This hotel has been open for about a year and was my favourite. As the name suggests it is located on a long powder white beach, with 2 pools, a great spa and plenty of sports activities for the more energetic.

The restaurants are situated around a central piazza where the nightly entertainment also takes place.

On our final full day we transferred to a Mauritian favourite La Tousserok. This is an elegant hotel offering great facilities & rooms with butler service. Again there is a good choice of dining venues and a private island to escape to. The trip over by boat is made a little more exciting if the sea is a little rough.

It is here you will also find the renowned golf course designed by Bernhard Langer on Ile des Cerfs. I hit a few balls on the driving range, what a setting for a game of golf.
Green fees are complimentary for Sun Resorts guests.

Each hotel has a wonderful kids club to keep the little ones amused whilst Mum & Dad relax. Family rooms are available at most of the hotels.

I cannot wait to return
